200M DRAFT RANKING by WAR...work in progress

PostWed Jul 12, 2017 10:02 pm

This is a work in progress. I'm listing the top 50 players based on their respective value in a 200M 12-team setting.

Ranking is based on WAR, which is Wins above replacement. Gehrig has 3.6 WAR in my ratings. So basically, your team is likely to lose 4 wins than if you replace him by what is probably the best first baseman that stands in the FA pool (think Jim Bottomley, who stands at nearly 0 WAR).

My ratings incorporate offense, defense, running, clutch, and roughly everything that counts for pitching, including gbA. There are still a few players for whom I still don't have gbA, so as the title says, it's a work in progress. New cards were incorporated, but I think I forgot the new Kershaw card (I'll update it). But gbA are missing for new players, so their WAR value will change somewhat.

WAR is listed in the second column besides the salary. Right you have for offensive players the value for Runs generated vs rhp and for Runs generated vs lhp. For pitchers, you have the expected number of innings and the calculated ERA in a 200 environment.

This is listed in a neutral stadium, which asssumed a HR=12/12 on both sides.

The babe's best card is the 16.47M card. His WAR is 8.2. He will give your team roughly 8 more wins than Joe Medwick, a replacement outfielder vs both lhp and rhp.

MODIFIED TOP 50
Code: Select all
1. Babe 8.2 WAR
2-3 Bonds/Gibson 7.4 WAR
4. Hornsby 6.2 WAR
5. Mantle 5.1 WAR
6-9 Fox/ Morgan/ Brett/ Lajoie 4.5 to 4.4 WAR
10-11 Charleston/ Vaughan 4.1-4.2 WAR
12-16 Bagwell Gehrig Williams Maddux Schmidt 4.0-3.9 WAR
17. Pedro in a 5-men rotation (but consider him lower if you mix *SP) 3.8 WAR
18-22 Thomas McGwire Duffy Barnes Mauer 3.4 to 3.6 WAR
23-29 Dimaggio Beckwith as 3rd Speaker Walker Dihigo as 2nd Piazza Kershaw 4-day 3.0--3.2 WAR
30-31. Simmons Larkin 2.9 WAR
32-36 ARod 2005/ Wells/ Kiner/ Alexander/ Johnson (sp) 2.6-2.7 WAR
(2nd cards) ARod 2007 and Pedro 3-day rest 2.5 WAR
37-42 Mays 11.69 card, Jeter, Wagner, Cobb 11.41 card, Harper Gagné 2.3-2.5 WAR
43-50 Walsh/ Eckersley/ Musial/ Rolen/ Jackson/ Pujols/ Boudreau/ Aaron 2.1-2.2 WAR

Ratings are based on a few assumptions, namely that the player sits on the bench when he is best used in a platoon---although I still assume that we will use his bad side a few times (20% for lefty crushers, 10% for right-handed sluggers). Pitching is based on 53%-47% and 24%-76% ratio for pitchers, and 27%-73% lefty-righty for hitters). You have below the amount of innings I assume a pitcher will give his team in a season based on which I evaluate his WAR. I gave lefty starting pitchers a small penalty, although I believe that in real life, the penalty is bigger than shown here in my ratings.

WAR is based on the player listed position, so if you play Mays at another position than centerfielder, his WAR value will be somewhat decreased because his defense will less contribute than in centerfield. Neverthess, I assumed that the bench replacement value would be of the same value for all three outfield positions. Just makes my life easier.

Per position.

Outfielders are mixed as if it was one position, but the position indicates where the player can generate the maximal value.

Generally, I only kept the player's best card, but I made a few exceptions for AROD (3b card and ss card) and Ott (of and 3b card). Also, I listed a few *SP and (non*) SP among starting pitchers.

I created a new category for reliever, the RPS, relief pitcher specialist. I consider the value if they were used almost strictly on their best side

Players who are worth zero WAR are usually listed by better overall card, but there might be exceptions. But in any case, they shouldn't be starers in a 200M league, except to back up for injuries.

Players with *L and *R have their value estimated based on a platoon system. If they place full time, their value would decrease sharply. A player like Morgan doesn't have a *L, because his value vs lefties is among the top 12 for second base. Of course, this is possible only because I assume that he will hit some right-handed relievers (I assume that a player that starts vs lhp will face 20% of right-handed pitchers). The fact that Morgan is among top 12 is also the consequence of the poor replacement value at second base. Brett has a *L because the replacement level of 3rd baseman vs lhp is much better.

Will take a closer look at this information and try to understand it better.

Thank you Marc for putting this together and sharing it. (Even if as an American I would prefer decimal points to commas. C'est la vie.)

Nice! Did you include OF throwing ability or base running speed?

Nice job on the double positions. Some other possibilities to include at double positions are Jimmy Foxx at 3b, Ed Delahanty at 3b, King Kelly at c, Ted Williams at lf, and Ralph Kiner at lf,

Thanks Bruce.

Did you include OF throwing ability or base running speed?

Both yes, although I must say that the contribution of running speed and stealing abilities are reduced due to the defensive quality of players involved in 200M leagues. Going from memory, I think that the best runner has a running WAR of 0.8 WAR max.

Jimmy Foxx at 3b, Ed Delahanty at 3b, King Kelly at c, Ted Williams at lf, and Ralph Kiner at lf

Actually, there are many outfielders who are set as "dh" in my listing but who would be just about as useful if they were to play left field. Dihigo is another player whose value based on WAR is almost the same in all available positions. But for King Kelly, Fox, and Delahanty, their WAR would go definitively down because of the defensive runs they would cost if they were placed at catcher spot or 3rd base.

BTW, I will post new ratings soon. Unilateral players like Lynn have their WAR too high, I also made a small mistake in the value of outfielders compared to the rest of the field, and I have to change the value of relievers (reverse lefties like Brewer and McGraw are ranked too high based on a faulty lefty-righty ratio. I also will add the new (non*)SP Kershaw...my ratings have him third best starting pitcher, just behind Maddux and 9.38M Pedro!!

I updated the tables. I made changes in the way I calculate WAR, especially for relievers. These values are for a neutral stadium, assuming HR=12/12. Beginning next week, I will be able to list players for small ballpark, lefty, righty and high-power ballparks.
