New league 80s-Geography teams-week 8 update

PostSat Jul 22, 2023 8:21 pm

Using the 80s players set, we will set out to determine which two teams, based primarily on city/state/country geography was the strongest in the 80s. Is it the New York Mets/Yankees who can send Dwight Gooden, Ron Guidry and Sid Fernandez to the mound as their starting pitcher? The St. Louis Cardinals/Kansas City Royals who add the hitting of George Brett to the speed of Vince Coleman, Ozzie Smith and Lonnie Smith? How about the Canadian entry which includes Tim Raines, Tony Fernandez, Dave Steib and Steve Rogers?

One of the challenges of theme leagues using the 80s set is a smaller player set. To address this, teams were combined, primarily based on geography, creating 13 possible teams. Here is a summary of the team combinations:

New York Mets/New York Yankees
Philadelphia Phillies/Pittsburgh Pirates
Houston Astros/Texas Rangers
Cincinnati Reds/Cleveland Indians
Chicago Cubs/Chicago White Sox
California Angels/Los Angeles Dodgers
Oakland Athletics/San Francisco Giants
Kansas City Royals/St. Louis Cardinals
Atlanta Braves/Detroit Tigers
San Diego Padres/Seattle Mariners
Baltimore Orioles/Boston Red Sox
Montreal Expos/Toronto Blue Jays
Minnesota Twins/Milwaukee Brewers

(Note---Boston/Baltimore, Atlanta/Detroit, Seattle/San Diego didn't have perfect combo teams based on their geography)

Average number of players: 49
Average number of hitters:29
Average number of pitchers: 20

Owners will have exclusive rights to players associated with the team they manager. In effect, each team has a farm system. Mark McGwire underperforming or having a bad year? Will Clark can be summoned as a replacement. Not happy with the production of Keith Hernandez? Don Mattingly is an alluring option available to the owner of the New York club.

Player set: 80s
DH: Yes
Drop penalty: Standard
Trades: Allowed; no restrictions
Salary cap: $90,000,000
Players assigned to team which they had the most plate appearances (hitters) or innings pitched (pitchers) from the time period between 1980 and 1989. An Excel sheet was created detailing which players are associated with each club. The team listed on the player cards has no impact on team assignment—the Excel sheet roster is the determinant of player assignment.
Division assignment—based on the salary of players available to each team—the 4 teams with the highest salary will form the east; the 4 teams with the lowest salary will form the west while the remaining 4 teams will form the central.
Draft order: Based on a randomizer/team draft on the message board
Team name: Include a reference to the team name/city/state so

The players associated with the teams not selected will not be eligible for this league.
