Background: Each position player was reviewed to determine the team which they had the most plate appearances (hitters) or innings pitched (pitchers) from 2000 to 2009. The results were recorded on an Excel sheet.
Player assignment is based solely on the roster file----the team appearing on the card are not relevant for the purpose of player placement. Steps were take to ensure the accuracy of data but if you detect an error please advise me prior to the team draft. Once the draft is initiated, no changes will be made to the player placements on their respective team.
All teams have some weaknesses but also could be contenders for the playoffs based on your guidance, roster moves and line up configuration
Unique aspects of this league
• You’ll know the players available to you and your division rivals right after the team draft.
• The ability to supplement your roster at the half way point of the season with a player with a salary ranging from $1,500,000 to $9,000,000—explained in more detail below
• You’ll be able to release and reinstate players without running the risk of another owner picking up that player.
• Expect to see trading activity---since the number of players is limited compared to a traditional season, finding a trading partner is more likely. This is part of the team selection strategy too—do you select a team with 40 players in hopes of being able to trade depth for a glaring need? For example, the Cleveland Indians have multiple starters in CF, 2B and SS---for teams that have a need, there is a high likelihood of making a trade that would benefit both clubs.
• You’ll be able to release and reinstate players without running the risk of another owner picking up that player.
Player set: 2000’s-Mystery
Trades: Allowed--no restrictions
Roster size: No limits/restrictions other than game rules
Drop: 5/10/20 (standard)
Salary Cap: $100,000,000
Team name: The actual franchise name will be used
Stadium: The team will play in the stadium associated with their franchise
Designated Hitter: The DH rule will be used
Waivers: Since you will know the players on your rosters before the draft, we will use the Frenzy system. The autodraft will be important for a small number of teams (explained in more detail below)
Draft order: Determined by random number generator run on the message board. Team draft selections can be traded if desired/terms can be reached with another owner.
Division placement: The owners with the first 4 selections will comprise the East. The next 4 comprise the Central and the last 4 comprise the West.
Players on the roster of teams not selected are ineligible for the entire season. See important note below for exceptions. So, if nobody selects the Cincinnati Reds, Ryan Freel will not be eligible to participate in the league.
Players can be added/dropped as often as desired consistent with SOM salary rules.
Players dropped remain available only to the team listed on the roster sheet. (Example—the owner of the New York Yankees drops Roger Clemens. Roger remains the property of the Yankees. The owner can re-activate Roger anytime subject to SOM rules.)
The following teams will not be participating in the league as they did not have sufficient players to field a competitive team. In order to achieve more competitive teams, some players from the following teams were judgmentally assigned to the remaining franchises to ensure SOM roster rules could be satisfied. Players who were assigned to another team are highlighted in red font for ease in identification on the leagues official roster sheet.

Note—players from these teams that were not assigned to another team ARE eligible to be selected under the mid-season acquisition feature of this league and for the teams who can add 1 or 2 players of $1 million or less to their roster.

26 teams are eligible for selection—10 of those teams will be able to supplement their roster with a selection of 1 (4 teams) or 2 players (6 teams) with salaries of $1 million or less.
For the 10 teams referenced above, the current player roster size is 31 (6 teams) or 32 players (4 teams). Therefore, to provide the minimum of 33 players, owners of these 10 teams can complete their roster by selecting additional players with salaries of $1 million of less from the teams that were not selected and won’t be participating as a franchise. This will be done via the auto draft.

Each eligible team will then have at least 33 players available to them---the average is 35 and the highest number of players is 41.
Once the season starts, no other players are eligible to be added to the roster other than the mid-season acquisition. All roster changes must be from the players associated with your team.
Mid Season Acquisition allowance:
After game 75, a one round draft will be held for all players who are not assigned to the 12 teams in the league. Owners can use up to the amount detailed on the player roster Excel sheet or their available cash—whichever amount is less--- to acquire one additional player for their roster. This player can be added to the roster after the conclusion of game 81 and becomes the exclusive property to the drafting owner. This player can be traded to another team if desired.
The allowance for each team is detailed in the Excel sheet containing rosters—the allowance amount is detailed on the “player count” worksheet in column “N”
The six teams with the highest player salaries can use up to $1,500,000 for an additional player.
The six teams with the next highest player salaries can use up to $3,000,000 for an additional player.
The six teams with the next highest player salaries can use up to $6,000,000 for an additional player.
The eight teams with the lowest player salaries can use up to $9,000,000 for an additional player.
Draft order-Mid Season Acquisition: The draft order will be established in reverse order of the standings as of game 75. In the event of ties, the order will be determined based on head to head records (two teams) or run differential (three or more teams). The team with fewer wins in the head to head competition will receive the earlier pick. If 3 or more teams are tied based on records, the team with the worse run differential will receive the higher pick. If the tiebreakers described above does not resolve the tie, a randomizer will be run to establish the order of selection.
Since we will only have two days between the establishment of the draft order and the players becoming eligible, each participant will have a 2 hour window to post their selection via a league wide e-mail. We will use the hours between 8 AM and 8 PM EDT. If a pick is not made, the owner with the next pick can post their selection. If you believe you won’t have access to the SOM site, please consider sending your selection to the commissioner or a person selecting after you. If you are unable to post your pick, you can select your eligible player when you can or simply add your selection after game 81.
Example: The Florida Marlins and New York Yankees are among the teams selected in this league. The Marlins can use up to $9 million to acquire any player who is not assigned to the roster of the 12 selected teams. The Yankees can use up to $1.5 million to acquire the player of their choice. If the Yankees only have $1 million in cash available, they can only acquire a player with a salary of $1 million.
Managing the salary cap:
Please remember that you will need to effectively manage the salary cap to comply with SOM roster rules. The Red Sox and Yankees in particular will likely require some creative decision making. This could include trades to reduce salaries of back up players. For example, the Red Sox have the rights to Doug Mirabelli who has a salary of over $3.1 million. The owner of the Red Sox may need to come up with a way to obtain a lower priced back up catcher—this could include trading higher priced players such as Kevin Millar, Jeff Fassero and Mike Timlin in order to provide salary cap flexibility or you will need to use the bonus pick not to pick up the “best player” but the player offering the best option given the salary cap. It’s advisable to consider and understand the salary situation of each team before selecting---a team with high value players will create other potential issues to navigate.
