70's Jim Palmer - Can someone explain????

PostWed May 27, 2020 1:31 pm

I grew up loving the Baltimore Orioles and most of their pitching staff of the 1970's ...so tell me WHY every time I pick Jim Palmer in the 70's set he is lousy!!! From looking at his 5 "mystery" cards there really isn't a bad one in the bunch..and yet he often pitches like a scrub! In the latest mystery tournament across all 12 seasons Palmer had an average season of 13-12 with an ERA around 4.30
Anyone have an explanation?

I generally agree. However the main reason might be his cards are in Memorial stadium for 81 games and he has to venture out into Mystery World of who knows what homer parks.

Your 391 points would have made it any other year ...I guess you can blame it on COVID-19 ….

Interesting article...but I'm not sold on BABIP and it's interpretation....those who believe in it tend to think Greg Maddux was slightly above average and was successful because of luck and the Braves good defense... I would be more sold on some combination of "exit velocity" and BABIP as in indication of pitching ability but exit velocity was not around back then....but the fact that Palmer (and Maddux) had abnormally low BABIP averages indicates to me they were able to consistently miss the big part of the bat!!!
