question about Hal's use of relievers ...

PostThu Feb 20, 2020 12:39 am

Please correct me if this is wrong ….I thought a reliever's performance was diminished when used 3 games in a row....

so WHY would Hal use Cecil Upshaw on a 3rd day in a row allowing 6 hits and a walk to lose the game when Moe Drabowsky was rested and a designated closer and he had not pitched all series....I can't figure it out!!! Upshaw has been doing great for my team but so has the newly acquired Drabowsky .,...neither was set to avoid either side of the plate ….oh well.....maybe he had the flu and the manager chose to rest him....

This is unsolvable. Drink beer instead

Agreed. Beer won't fix the problem, but you won't care nearly as much.

Without seeing your settings and the game results, I can't give you an answer. I can say that if a pitcher pitches briefly in a game, he can pitch a third game a row without penalty.

Links to those last 3 games would be helpful with a diagnosis.

These are the 3 games....
Upshaw went for a 2 inning save in the 1st game on 13 pitches.
Upshaw blew a 2-1 lead in the 8th in the 2nd game going 1.1 innings on 23 pitches.
so I thought he would be rested for the 3rd game ...but no!!
...in the 3rd game he came in the 8th inning with a 6-2 lead and proceeded to give up 6 hits in 1 inning on 47 pitches!!! ..the entire time Moe Drabowsky just sat with no appearances in the 3 games....
I have Upshaw and Drabowsky both listed as closers and I have Drabowsky in the setup role as well....would have expected him to come in the 8th inning of the 3rd game to let Upshaw rest for a game....oh well....

First two games Upshaw is clearly listed as coming in with a role of "set-up". Check your settings there.

Do you have him tagged for do not bring in before the 8th?

Also, if the rest of your pen is "over-managed" HAL will use the better card to fill a role not defined. Up 6-2, that's not a role that can be filled with a setting. If you have guys listed as specialist, they might be avoided because of the 6-2 lead.

For the first game, did your closer come in 2 consecutive appearances before then? That would explain why Upshaw was left in and not pulled for your closer.

Forgot to add that I believe the 60's and 70's sets don't use super advanced closer rules. Somebody might want to correct me there.

For what it's worth, Upshaw was not fatigued, so his performance was due to bad luck, not overuse. He remained at F9 (i.e., fully rested) right to the end.

just curious, how can you determine that?
... the fact that he threw quite a few pitches the previous 2 days didn't have an effect on the 3rd appearance?

Go to the Play by Play tab. The last column shows the pitcher's fatigue rating at the end of each at bat.
