Winning in the Astrodome

PostSat Jun 10, 2017 6:32 pm

I assume a line up of high OBP and base stealers, defense and pitching.

1980's

BATTING ORDER
C Tony Pena
1B Pete Pose
2B Harold Reynolds
3B Terry Pendleton
SS Larry Bowa
LF Jim Rice
CF Mcgee
RF Tony Gywnn
DH Lonnie Smith

STARTERS
Steve Carlton
Mike Scott
Mark Langston
Jimmy Key

SET UP/CLOSER
Lee Smith
Dennis Eckersley

I'm wondering if I should drop Pete Rose for Steve Garvey and drop Jim Rice for a better defensive players

Advice anyone?

are you platooning lonnie at DH?

Rice is the only power you have, though he has a lot of GIDP

garvey/rose - do you need a LH

I just won a championship in the Astrodome with this team:

I did not have a total "slap hitting" team but, I think, I good mix of things. I also got lucky on a few cards. Also it is important to take note of what stadiums your opponents play in. If you have the Astrodome and the three other teams in your division have the King Dome, you may want to have some pop ready for road games.

Good luck!

I am happy this post was made. I was setting up to start a 60's Astrodome team when I saw it. I decided to look at my dome teams to see if I could contribute to the discussion. I have played 10 season in the 60's (mostly) and the 70's with only two of them making the playoffs, one as a wild card team. Neither got past the semi's.

Thanks for the post and the reminder that I can't win in the Astrodome. Maybe I'll try Comiskey next...

If it was me... I'm keeping Rose over Garvey, because Garvey's only real advantages over Rose are is defense, which you don't need as much in the Astrodome, and power, which in Garvey's case is deceptive... he hits a decent amount of HRs, but he's not really a power hitter per se. I'm keeping Rice because he's the only power hitter you have right now.

My suggested changes would be this: move Gwynn to CF, dump McGee, and find a corner OF who hits lefty and has at least a little pop. People fall in love with McGee because he has a "1" rating in CF, but he also has a 12 error rating, which is abysmal. McGee has 2 really good offensive cards and 3 mediocre ones, and what McGee does well you have plenty of. If you want to free up some more dough, consider dumping Lee Smith. There are so many decent $.75 RP in the 80s set, do you really need Eckersley and Smith?

You've pretty much got three RBI guys, including Rice, which is important. Keep Rice. What I like most about your team is you've got many guys that can hit 25-30 doubles. Bat a base stealer in front of Rice.

I think you're replying to someone about his team from 3 years ago. Good discussion though.
