Fielding 1st BaseMen Double Plays

PostWed Apr 01, 2015 12:41 am

Not a big deal and has nothing to do with strategy I think but, its early in the season, Mark McGwire is playing 1B every game The fielding stats show him with 5 DP and only 2 assists. How does a 1B become responsible for 5 DP without getting more than 2 assists? He keeps fielding the ball, tagging the runner and then stepping on 1st? He can do this 3 times in 6 games?

A first baseman gets credit for just catching the ball at the end of a normal double play (e.g., a 6-4-3 double play).
