Probably the most challenging aspect of the mystery card game is evaluating relief pitchers.
Take the following stat line for a Back-to-the-90s pitcher:
IP = 39
H = 55
ER = 35
BB = 19
SO = 43
HR = 6
ERA = 8.08
WHIP = 1.90
Pretty awful. I finally gave up on him, Greg McMichael. It turns out he had his 1993 card, which is outstanding and is his best.
Then take this stat line for another pitcher, same team:
IP = 2
H = 5
ER = 2
BB = 4
SO = 2
HR = 0
ERA = 9.00
WHIP = 4.50
Arthur Rhodes has one horrible stinker year. Even though his stat line was based on only 2 games and 2 innings, I cut him. I did this after looking at the doubles he gave up to lefties, the walks, how quickly HAL pulled him, and I concluded/feared there was a good chance I had his awful season. I never let go of anyone based on so little evidence, but I was right.
