INJURY MYSTERY 60s

PostFri Sep 20, 2013 3:24 am

Orlando Cepeda goes down to injury vs RHP, Strikeout, he is out for two games, yet his injury cards read as follow.
1960 - HBP
1961 - gb (ss) A
1962 - gb (2b) A
1967 - HBP
1969 - gb (ss) B
This is the second time Cepeda been injuried with a strikeout vs RHP, also for two games.
The pitchers were Jim Bunning and Early Wynn.

I would say there are two possibilities:

1. There is a mistake on the card (or in the computer database that holds the card).

However, if he was facing a high strikeout pitcher (say, a 1965 Koufax), I'd say this is more likely:

2. The SOM computer (and online) game will sometimes override certain results to improve statistical accuracy. There are some pitchers who would walk too many hitters without these adjustments and even more who wouldn't get enough strikeouts. So the game will override a result here and there such as changing a ground out to a strikeout.

So, the question is who was pitching?

To me, this is a pretty serious problem in the mystery card game. Has anyone else noticed this problem? This used to be an issue several years ago (when the game was hosted by TSN), but it had gotten fixed and I haven't seen this problem in a long time.

I can see the logic behind the explanation, but I've never actually seen this happen. Could REALLY throw a curve in the card reveal process.

Definitely an error. Neither Bunning nor Wynn have a super high strikeout card. Also, the fact that it happened twice really points to an error on the card or in the database.

Please report this to SOM so it can be hopefully fixed.

Any indication that it was the result of a Hit and Run try?
