Playoff results:
Cincinnati Indians defeated the Bay Area Athletic Giants 3-1
The Indians outscored the Giants 27-12.
St. Louis Royals defeated the Pittesota TwiRates 3-1
The 83 win Royals continued the curse of the 100 game winning team by defeating the 100 game winning TwiRates. The TwiRates won the first game 2-0 and then lost the next 3 games. The Royals outscored the TwiRates 16-9.
Finals:
The Indians won games 1 and 2 rather easily winning game 1 13-6 and game 2 13-5 bringing them to within 2 games of a championship. Dave Concepcion was the offensive star----his playoff average after game 2 was an impressive .707.
In game 3, the Royals turned the tables winning 10-2 behind Tom Seaver. George Brett and Freddie Patek both had 4 hits to pace the offense.
In game 4, Johnny Bench was injured for the next 2 games in the 3rd inning. However, the Indians took a 9-3 lead into the 8th inning and a 9-4 lead in the the 9th. The Royals rallied and tied the game on a Ted Simmons 2 run single. The game went into extra innings and was settled in the 13th inning. After two outs, singles by George Brett, Freddie Patek and then Ted Simmons ended the game.
Game 5 featured the two game 1 starters--Jon Matlack for the Cardinals and Gary Nolan. The Royals won behind a strong outing of Jon winning 5-2. George Brett and John Mayberry homered in the win.
Facing elimination, the Indians forced a game 7 behind Gaylord Perry, winning 9-2. Both Joe Morgan and Ken Griffey homered in the victory.
Game 7 featured Tom Seaver for the Royals and Mel Stottlemyre for the Indians. Tom Seaver had finished the regular season with a record of 18-15 while Mel also won 18 games during the regular season. The Royals raced out to a 9-1 lead after they batted in the 6th inning. The Indians rallied to close the gap to 9-4 after the 7th inning. However, the Royals scored 3 more times while the Indians could only add one more run--the game ended with the Royals winning 12-5.
The victory game Burley Norseman his first championship in the Strat/the Mystery game. He did it the hard way defeating the two teams with the most wins--the TwiRates and Indians- in the regular season during the playoffs. George Brett delivered a slash line of .471/.500/.784 while Tom Seaver went 3-0 during the playoffs with an ERA of 2.70/WHIP of 1.07.
Congrats to all of the playoff teams for a job well done and Burley Norseman on winning the championship.
