Passed Ball Question

PostThu Jan 13, 2022 1:57 pm

Pardon my naivety, but how does a catcher with a 0 PB rating (Charles Johnson) end up with 2 passed balls???

Obviously I'm missing something that I probably should know.

I asked a similar question a while back, and I think Mark explained the brunt of it:

Add this first - somewhere along the line I discovered I can’t even link a thread anymore. Time for a tutorial.

There are passed balls on the x-chart separate from those determined by PB rating. (In fact they're determined by the pitcher's WP rating, which seems a bit odd.)

That explains it. Thanks. Kinda figured it was an X-chart thing. As for the WP rating, I think that actually makes sense, the more wild the pitcher is, the more likely a passed ball is to occur simply because there are more balls in the dirt, etc.

Sure, it just seems odd to score it as a PB rather than WP since WP is what's being checked.

I'm thinking it is "factored" into the possibility ???? :?:
