Jackie Robinson Day (April 15th)

PostThu Apr 15, 2021 1:44 pm

Happy Jackie Robinson Day to us all. This was really an amazing accomplishment for baseball in 1947, and really for our society. It took another 15 years or so until MLK and that movement moved us further forward. Unfortunately there's still plenty of racial problems. Hopefully we will move forward with love and baseball.

Nice to see we can celebrate what is good about life. Baseball really is a world wide game now with so many different types of people playing it. Aussies, Latins, even Canadians (wink, wink). I appreciate celebrating us all being in a better place. Thanks Bio man for noting the day. Cheers,

Happy Jackie Day to you and yours! What a courageous, heroic man. Planning to watch 42 tonight to celebrate. A great film. One of my favorite small details about it is now Ralph Branca won't be solely remembered as the guy who gave up the Shot Heard Round the World.

Quite amazing when considering the arc of history at the time. The undermining of reconstruction following the civil war from all corners of society--including at the highest levels--SCOTUS, T Roosevelt, WWilson, FDR, et al.

A brave man in a baseball uniform convinced an entire society of something that other brave men like BookerT and WEB Dubois just couldn't in their time. It wasn't a poll-tested positive thing--he faced the same intransigence as those before him. But the power of play made a difference.

Jackie (and to an extent his team of course) were on the leading edge and did what was not the generally accepted thing at the time. They went against the tide and changed it. True courage.

Amen. One wonders, though, when you see a team called White Boys, in all caps. Someone needs to inform the team’s manager that the south lost.

Dopes...they’re everywhere.

Here’s to you, Jackie. You’re a true hero.
