Best Gehringer Years Uncarded?

PostMon Jan 18, 2021 11:48 am

Why don't we have a 1929 or 1937 Charlie Gehringer card? Arguably his best years.

In '29 he led the league in Runs, Hits, Doubles, Triples and Stolen Bases And is bullet proof.

In '37 he had a career high .371 average, a career high fielding % and won his only MVP award.

Would be nice to one of those cards.

From an obituary: The offseason often meant barnstorming, traveling with teams of stars from the major leagues and the Negro leagues, playing in small towns. Gehringer described one such tour: “We went up through the Dakotas and Minnesota and Kansas. Got to bat against Satchel every other day, which wasn’t much fun.”

Paige returned the compliment in his autobiography: “Gehringer was real tough for me, the toughest of all those stickers.”

Not definitive, but found it means something like this in earlier 20th century American English:

• a person or thing that sticks
• a persevering or industrious person

And, absolutely agree on getting better Gehringer cards in. Awesome years, '29 and '37.

Check the 21.1 Nominations Start Stats Running List on the Card Discussions forum. '37 looks better than '29.
('29 not bad, just not as good as '37)

Andy,

Did you post numbers for both cards? If so I didn't see it.

I have been thinking the exact same thing lately about Gehringer. Good point Rich!
