I'm sad to hear this. He was the best pitcher on the Yankees during their era in the wilderness after 1964.

And I still remember his wonderful 1964 card--which I over-used with my first Strato board set way back when.

Mel was always one my favorites, He saved the season in 64 and then became one of the few bright stars on some poor Yankee teams. I was at "old-timers" day in 2015 [it was played at night that year] and the Yanks honored Mel with a plaque in monument park . I don't think there was dry eye in the house [for anyone over 60] because of how much Yankees fans loved him. RIP Mel and thanks for the memories. Bill
