Requiem for Dale Murray (inspired by Chompsky) -- Closed

PostSat Feb 17, 2018 4:21 pm

24-team league with unique parks and “Super-Relievers” removed.
> Cap is $100M
> DH will be used
> Standard 5/10/20 transaction fees

This set removes all RP-only cards with Salary of $2.00M or higher. Rather than trying to limit RP innings, the intent is to limit the ability to “game” the salary structure by exploiting the RP loophole.

In addition, set features “classic” period from 1911 (i.e., the introduction of the “lively ball”) to 1993 (the last year before the offensive explosion of the mid-nineties). There are two exceptions: 1906 Nap Lajoie and 1908 Honus Wagner are also included in the set.

Background: Chompsky proposed a league where all relievers with endurance of R3 or higher were removed from the set. However, since strong R2 relievers can be pushed well beyond 200 IP, this still has limited impact in terms or constraining Super-Relievers. Now trying a somewhat different approach by simply removing all True RP cards with Salary of $2.00M or higher.

Hoping this format will be acceptable to Chris Franco (who frowns on pre-deadball and post-1985 "steroid" players). All are welcome! :D

I love it! I can't believe that a league that severely limits super relieving as a strategy is inspired by -moi- !!! Life is funny sometimes.

[I have a league recently where my main reliever pitched 462 innings and nabbed 40 wins.]

Anyway, RiggoDrill, I love the concept. I will do my best to field a team. Thank you for setting this up.

If you include the playoffs, my main reliever had 506 innings, was 43-7, along with 22 of 24 in save opportunities, and an ERA under 2.30.

To use a reliever like that you should pay something north of the good Maddux card (rather than 8.8m). Keep in mind, to get that many innings from an R5, you have to use bottom of the barrel starters. They get beat up so you are constantly playing catch up baseball. In this league that approach worked well, but in many leagues the well designed teams shrug off this crude approach...and what you get is a .500 team with a lot of innings by the bullpen. A lot less interesting.

Anyway, back to your Requiem league. I noticed that some of the new reliever cards that cost more than 2m are accidentally included in the set. And I noticed that some starting pitchers with R3, R4 and R5 could potentially be used in your league. I am not going in that direction with my team design, just noting it.

Yes, many of the other teams in your league had serious payroll shedding issues.
