1957 Milwaukee Braves

Maybe one of you guys who have been around from the beginning of the ATG format can explain to me why Bob Hazle and Danny O'Connell were left out and instead Nippy Jones (3rd firstbaseman) and Carl Sawatski (3rd catcher) were included. I would love to see Hazle's card!

I can only guess.
O'Connell was primarily a NY Giant in 1957
Hazle stats are too good. Although he was 4th in ROY voting.

Re: O'Connell so was Bobby Thomson, but he is also part of the Braves "25" players even though his card is assigned to the Giants.

No idea then.
But his name was Thompson.

In the bottom of the ninth inning, down 4-2 to the Brooklyn Dodgers, the New York Giants’ Bobby Thompson came up to the plate with runners on second and third

But his name was Thompson.
Only to those who misspelled his name, as I did for many years. The correct spelling is Thomson.

You mean Hurricane Hazle?! just read up on him and he's the ultimate flash in pan. He might be better than Gates Brown as he hit one HR vs a lefty!

Yep, that's the guy, just like Brown he played on a championship team and was instrumental in getting them there.

The 1957 Braves were part of ATG 1, which consisted of 35 teams roughly 800 cards total. At that time, strat had not created super advanced cards for the 1957 season. The cards were all Even, not balanced to hit better vs lefties or righties so Aaron and Mathews were "E" rather than 3L and 5R respectively.

I am thinking that the "generic" Hazle card would have then been one that would have hit to a level of .403/.477/.649 vs both lefties and righties and been among the best cards in the set though injury prone. (Since he was 1 for 3 with a HR vs lefties not sure what the new card would look like....maybe better vs lefties??????) My guess is they didn't want Hazle as one of the best cards in the set. Eventually they updated the 1957 cards here to the super advanced/cadillac cards but did not add him.

The key to the 1957 Braves was Red.
The 56 Braves were very good, pretty much the same team except at 2B. Danny O was a team player, got a lot of walks, but his BA and defense were not good.
Scheondienst coming over from the Cards brought top defense, high BA, substantially more 2B/3B/HRs.....and batting 2nd in front of Aaron and Mathews made a huge difference.

Hurricane certainly filled in admirably for Bruton when he got hurt, and his hot run was a bonus.
Don McMahon was also a valuable addition to the pitching staff.

but the main guy in the run to winning the pennant was Red.
