Injury Curse

PostMon Nov 20, 2017 1:34 pm

Anyone seen this before?

Just started a new league with 1987 Ken Phelps - 1 injury chance. In the first week, he's been injured four times: the first for one game, the second for two games, third for three games and fourth for four games.

He's had 55 plate appearances so far. The odds of four injuries in 55 PAs is about 1 in 10,000. Is Ken Phelps cursed?

Although I don't know this for sure, many years of observation and experience have led me to conclude that there is probably something in the engine's code that increases the probability of being re-injured after returning from an injury. It actually makes sense for HAL to do this as it reflects real life. It might even be one of the few areas where SOM's treatment of injuries is actually effective and realistic.

I don't know if there is or isn't a re-injury subroutine in Stratomatic, but I do know that if the injury as stated on the card with the level 1-2-3-4-5-6 is selected so that the frequency matches amount of games missed having the game engine re-injure multiple times leads to MORE injuries than reality not closer to reality.

And in this specific case, the wonderful Ken Phelps wasn't even injured he was a platoon player, and not a very well loved platoon player after 1987 season in 1988 when Steinbrenner went ballistic that the Yankees traded Jay Buhner for him, a piece of Yankee stupidity at the time, which culminated in Seinfeld series commenting on the trade when supposedly Steinbrenner was letting George's parents know he had died.......

On one of my recent teams, the 10.58 Al Simmons (a 1 injury) missed 43 of the first 98 games! Not to mention leaving 4 games early when he was injured. And yet in another league, the 8.80 Mark McGwire (a 2 injury) only missed 10 games the whole season. And in another the 3.65 Ripken (a 4 injury, but what a nice card) only missed 13 games.

Here you go make sense of this, this is typical for me in the last year, every one of my starters in every one of my leagues gets injured every league of which I almost always lead the league in injury days. The only pattern I ever see is continued injuries, I used to try to go to 3 day only injuries but when I had 100 days off with 3 day guys I figured what’s the point. I find it rather amusing.

And of course, Simmons went down for another 5 games. Now he will have missed 48 of 117 games.
