Sick of 300 inning pitched relievers!

PostSat Nov 18, 2017 1:18 am

Is there anyway to enforce a league set up where pure relief pitchers are not allowed to be used more then say 125% of their total pitched real life stats and If someone violates this rule what can be done to punish violators! I dont know about you but i am sick of seeing dale murray or bruce sutter, johnny miljus among others with double digits wins and 200 plus innings and starters with less than 100 inning pitched for a season!

The problem is the pricing model does not take into consideration how relievers can be used. For the most part R3 and above relievers are underpriced by half. The way to control it in a league is to create a private league and have any R3 and above reliever taken cost twice his salary against the cap. This would be enough in a 80 or 100 million league to prevent the super usage relieving strategy

Create a set of rules you like, and create a league which adopts those rules.

New rules, new restrictions, makes for a lot of fun.

To me the simplest solution is the best. If you want a league where the super-reliever strategy is minimized, if not eliminated altogether, just set a rule where no pure relievers are allowed to be over 4 million in salary. Alternatively, you can play at caps above 100m, where the strategy begins to lose it's effectiveness. The higher the cap, the less effective that strategy is.

No DH helps greatly.

Setting pure relievers to <$4m is a decent option, but you can still trot Wilcy Moore or Hank Robinson out there for 380 innings and 32 wins, as I recently did with the former.

A better super-reliver mitigation strategy in my opinion is to limit relievers to R2.

And I agree with Chris that no-DH basically disincentivizes the strategy.

I also agree with Chompsky that it is an easy fix - just join (or create) a league with either a modified player set or (easier) gentleman's agreement. I am in several such leagues all the time.

Better in my opinion to keep maximum flexibility in the overall game and then accommodate different sensibilities on a league-by-league basis. Doing strange things with players is definitely part of the fun for many of us. -matt

Given the widespread disenchantment with outliers and the super reliever strategy, I'm surprised this league with the "Chompsky shuffle" never gained any traction:

It might have filled as a 12 team league. 24 is kind of ambitious for this type of league.
