Very interesting article about Ichiro from the Seattle Times:

Still playing at age 50?

I grew up watching Rose. But if I was drafting a 25 year old Rose or a 25 year old Ichiro taking Ichiro.

Rose played several infield positions but I had the sense at the time he was moved to infield to make room for better fielding outfielders. He played some second but settled at third because his range was below average for a middle infielder. And then later moved to first base partly because that is what team needed but also a concession to age and that being the position where he was the least defensive liability.

Flip side gotta keep in mind part of Ichiro's success this year is that he is not playing every day. He gets used in situations and matchups where he has highest odds of success.

Rose hit more doubles but a large part of his getting so many hits was playing on so many great Reds and Phillies teams that turned the lineup over getting him more plate appearances than the average leadoff hitter. Once I got on base I probably could have scored a lot of runs with the likes of Lee May, Tony Perez, Joe Morgan, Concepcion, Bench, Foster hitting behind me.

Bottom line both were great players. In many ways for many reasons people will compare the two. But really such comparisions are for the most part unfair to both players. For my money compare them if you want. But any comparision that concludes that either player was any less of a great player does a disservices to both players.

This is incorrect. Rose moved to third at Sparky's request to get the team's best hitters in the lineup.

Like fine wine, (for this year at least) he seems to be improving with age ...

Rose was selected to the All Star Team at 4 different positions. 1B 2B LF RF.

I agree with the making teammates better argument too. He showed Philly the way to the trophy!!

Betwen the two of them how many 200 hit seasons do they have??

I did not watch or listen to the game, but apparently he was this close to having a perfect 4-4 day at the plate.

From the ESPN game recap:

Suzuki doubled, singled twice and had another hit taken away on a replay challenge, leaving him six shy of 3,000 in the Miami Marlins' 6-3 victory. ... Suzuki also walked, scored a run and came up just short on his bid to beat out an infield hit. All of that in wilting, 93-degree heat

What's really funny is I saw him play in spring training this year and he looked completely done. Shows ya what spring training games are worth.

I'm sorry to keep posting links about Ichiro, but this one from ESPN is probably the best, most detailed one about his approach to the game and the preparation he goes through to succeed. I wish more ballplayers were as passionate about the game as Ichiro is ...
