Playoff tiebreakers?

PostMon Aug 24, 2020 11:39 pm

Anyone know how playoff slots are awarded in the event of ties?

Our just finished regular season:

https://365.strat-o-matic.com/league/headtohead/449156

Had three teams with 86 wins, and just trying to understand why the spots went as they did.

Which leads me to guess:

First, head to head results for the division title (in our case, a 12-12 tie).

Then run differential.

This would have broken the tie for central division champ.

Then the two runners up face off for the wild card the same way (in our case that was 4-5 HTH) and never made it to run differential, and the “loser’s” 8-4 mark versus the division titleist never came in to play.

So the team with the overall best record against the other two, and the best run differential, takes a seat.

With 3 way ties, "in" division record becomes the first tiebreaker--frequently it works out this way, most of us that have played a while has this happen to them.

The other two teams had a better record within their division.

The Game rules can be found at the top of your pages on the right hand side. Info/Help >>>Game Rules.

The Playoff Rules are toward the bottom of the page.

Here is what the rules are for your situation:

What happens in the event of a tie for a Division Winner, Wild Card spot, or home-field advantage?

Tiebreakers for a 2-way tie are, in order:
- Head-to-head record vs. each other
- Run differential overall
- Coin flip
Tiebreakers for a 3-way tie are, in order:
- Best record vs. teams within division
- Run differential overall
- Coin flip

I am tripped up with this being basically a two way tie for a division title, plus, depending on how you might look at it either a second two way tie for the WC or a three way tie for WC.

Would “in division” apply to the WC too? We had only one >500 team in the division but 4/4 teams were >/=500 out of the division. In fact the one team that was 16 over versus division rivals was the worst, at 500 even, out of the division. Which is meaningless but weird.

It was a 2 way tie for division, then a 2 way tie for WC, of which one team beat the other 5-4.
