UPDATED WITH RIGHT GAME LINK

How can 1 team have such a good record then get destroyed in a game like this.

why would my pen bring in Drake and Morgan that are LH specialist for 3 2/3 inning when they have no left handed batters and 2 switch hitters.

Also new so perhaps not the ideal guy to answer your question.

I have learned a couple things, the first one being s**t happens. It is a simulation, not a photo-realistic recreation.

Secondly, as to reliever choice. The computer bullpen choices do seem pretty random sometimes. I have looked at successful teams which appear to effectively have their excellent SP set to never come out, slow hooks, don't relieve until F5 or something like that.

The OTHER way it seems to be done, is get your good relievers in as early as possible and leave them in. So if you have a great and expensive reliever, if you just set them as "closer" you don't get much mileage out of them. But if you set your best as middle reliever and as setup, and set them as slow hook and not to remove until F8 fatigue, then you can get a LOT of innings out of them while you are ahead in games. Then use your second best, for closer and late/tied.

In your situation, you were getting killed. It is rational, to not bring the relievers you have designated as "closer" or "setup" into that situation. Maybe you only have one "mopup" guy. So it makes sense, that kind of rando appearing guys were picked to pitch.

I would take a look at it from HAL's perspective.

You have a 5 man bullpen - two are 9L relievers and one an 8R.

Your 8R and closer both have pitched in the past two games - so HAL will often avoid using them in a third straight game if possible - especially a blowout. That leaves you with Liriano and the two 9L relievers to eat up 7 1/3 innings when your starter gets shelled in the first. All three are going to need to pitch in this one despite the 9Ls and the roles you have assigned to them.

You have three S5 and two S6 starters - that leaves a lot of innings to the bullpen. Particularly with those specialist relievers they may need to pitch in roles outside their best opportunities to fill those relief innings.

You have a nice team, now 20 games over .500 and a +84 run diff. You should do well over the full season, but a bad games here and there is well within random chance.
