Thoughts behind CHALLENGE:Making it Real PostWWII league

PostSun Feb 16, 2020 9:20 pm

Just for the record, I created the "Making it Real" Challenge league for a few reasons. I realize that the Strat community is more aligned with being in leagues with MORE money available and MORE players in the player pool. The past "reduced" player pool league I just finished had Gates Brown as the league leader in AVG(OVER .400),B. Humphreys Dale Murray and Lance McCullers(??) as the ERA leaders, 10 batters with over 60 HRS(Adcock and Mantle at 69 each), 10 players with over 140 Rbi's( Brett league leading with 176), HOF pitchers with over 70 Hrs allowed, etc etc etc.
Now I realize that these 12 team leagues are going to have ALL STARS at every position, 1-9(DH leagues) and so HOF pitchers will get hit more. Its just a little odd to have bit players with hardly any career---lead leagues because there is NO usage control on a guy's fabulous "season" of like less than 100ab's, or pitcher with 6 starts in reality getting 25-30 here and his "awesome" stat lines don't play right when extended over a REAL 162 game season.
So the rules I created here, drastically curtail usage by excluding them from the player pool. I think it creates an extremely challenging league setup. In my original list of drafted and ranked players, I believe I had at least 6 or 7 hitters ( out of the 14) salaried under 1 Mil a year, and at least 3 pitchers too( out of the 10). Forcing realistic outlays of funds for pitching and hitting, with No DH makes for a Very challenging league. I do Not have hopes for the league getting filled, but I did want to try to induce that. I believe that my outlay of funds was 28.35 for Pitching, and 31.65 for hitting. If I had friends that were into Strat and Tabletop baseball as much as I was, I would have made this a private league and offered a $50 prize to the winner---Just to see how this would all play out. Anyway---that was the thought process on creating challenging league based on smaller pool of players and a smaller budget with NO DH( to HELP the pitchers! lol). ALL teams in the HISTORY of MLB has had, and always will, bit players and non superstars that make their contribution to a TEAM. They are inside STRAT's player pools. Viva! the Pitcher and the less than SuperStar major leaguer!

Non DH leagues take much longer to fill. Otherwise it looks like a good idea to me... But you should probably post this in the ATG8 forum.

Thanks for your thought. I am not worried about a time factor in filling the league( even the possibility it might never fill---I have seen that obviously). I feel these type of rules and usage constraints will paint a league mosaic( if it would come to fruition)that will much more closely mimic MLB seasons of the past( statistically speaking), especially from 1947--1987. Teams were lucky if they had 2 players with over 35 hrs a piece. Teams always had small time offensive players, platoons, defensive specialists on their rosters. No one had an All Star at every position. Watching HOF pitchers in Strat leagues with over 4 ERA's, and one season wonder relief pitchers dominate leagues I like to think of ATG to stand for All Time Great Career players, not a quirky All Time Seasons by players. I get a sour taste when Kal Daniels and Dale Murray trump Roberto Clemente and Goose Gossage for example. I KNOW that those are the rules that experienced players exploit to WIN a league The problem is that in a reduced player pool, open to every player in history, with huge team creation Budgets, endless players available, and the DH----spews out a very un recognizable Final season stat mosaic. Ok Ok--Dude, you want to WIN you might say. I just don't find that type of unlimited rule set produces a league that will favor a select few( who know how to exploit), but more importantly a Statistical output not in line with anything in history. All HOF pitchers got to face off against many sub par all star hitters, and many dominated All Star hitters most of their career too. Strat-o-Matic's liberal placement of the HOMERUN( game changing in one roll) skews out the game extremely in favor of the hitter. Pitching has always trumped hitting hstorically. The 50/50 percent of the die roll in Strat is inherently unfair to a pitcher in general. I mean a pitcher has a fatigue rating and can usually ONLY go downward. I would like to see a game that recognizes a pitching performance that is Dominant, and rewards a pitcher for being ON his A game that day. Of course this is all my take on things and just an opinion. I play tabletop baseball solo and prefer a more realistic simulation. If Tom Seaver would actually give up 70hrs( never been done by anyone historically ever that I know of) in an ALL Star league of 12 teams, I would never have been a baseball fan having been a pitcher in my real life. The output of HRs per AB, Runs per AB in the last league that I participated in, were higher than any baseball season in history! Even last year, 2019. I also realize that many if not most, want the prodigious offensive output, and only care about Homeruns and winning. If I could find 12 guys who would want to play close to what I created, I would make the league Private and offer up a Prize to the winner down the road in the future. Even a continuing league with new rules for season to season team roster changes.
Thanks for reading. I know this was a long post.
