2 catcher rule

PostFri Sep 06, 2019 12:27 pm

We just had a league draft and start preseason and one of the teams only has one catcher. I thought every team was required to have at least two. How is this possible?

Check and see if he has a player in which Catcher isn't his primary position, but he's eligible at C.

I checked. He has a player with C as a secondary position.
However the roster rules state the following:

You must have at least 25 players and no more than 28 players.
You must have at least 13 and no more than 17 hitters.
    - At least two of those hitters must have catcher as their primary position.
You must have at least 11 and no more than 14 pitchers.
You must have at least 5 pitchers who have starting pitcher Endurance ratings (e.g. S7).
You must have at least 4 "pure" relievers (i.e. a relief rating (e.g. R2) but no starter rating).
You must have at least 1 pitcher who has a closer Endurance rating (e.g. C4).

Oh he drafted someone who is C eligible, but C is not his primary position, and missed out on that pick, he will be given the primary position as a replacement. Then he will be left with 1 C.

2 things if that happens to you.

1. You cannot make any FA moves until you get that 2nd C. It means if his first waiver isn't to pick up a 2nd C, all his waivers will fail until he does.

2. If his team was perfect with no changes, and he played with only 1 C, it would never get hurt

Another possibility is that he dropped a catcher immediately after the draft, before you had a chance to look at his roster. This would show up under transactions.

I had this in a league recently. I’m a newbie and I asked about it. One of the vets said:
“The primary position catcher rule is only relevant during auto drafts.”

The team had king who had a second position as catcher. It appears it worked all season.

It was an auto draft league.
After looking at his transactions he dropped a C and picked up a C eligible (not primary pos.) player during waivers and than did two days worth of transactions before picking up a second C.
He came to my attention because he offered me a trade.

Very possible. In fact an AD card without 2 players with catcher as their PRIMARY position will not be accepted. You can later drop one (or both) of those players for players with C as their secondary position. After the AD the only rule is that you must have at least 2 players who are catcher eligible.
