Looking a little more at the misc stats page. Some good comments on this. I would say this page may be my most underutilized tool. No excuse other than laziness.

Looking at baserunning for one of my teams. Team opportunities 84, 56 advanced, 5 out.
So how do you guys use that information?

39 games in so little over 2 baserunning decisions per game. Is 56 a good number of times to have advanced? If 5 too many times to have been thrown out? Can/should I use this information to change the team baserunning settings? Or do you consider that to be over thinking micro managing?

How do we all feel about this aspect? Are there any targets that you try to hit? Maybe a guideline when these numbers mean your team settings are too aggressive or too conservative?

I don't usually tweak the settings because I will almost always forget to reset them.

My most memorable oops moment on changing something and forgetting to change back was years ago when I took Roberto Alomar out of lineup due to injury and forgot to put him in for a couple weeks. Was just glancing at team stats and noticed his ABs were really low compared with rest of team.

On my current team had Mathews get injured a couple times and wanted to make adjustments instead of leaving it up to Hal. It suddenly hit me. I could set up a reminder in outlook to remind me when to change the lineups back. Copied and pasted current lineups on the reminder to help me remember what my lineups were prior to the change.

And it just hit me I could do the same thing for all team settings. Why not tweak some settings when facing certain opponents and set reminders to change them back? Not a tool on the strato site but certainly one I have available on my computer. I could even copy and paste on all changes as a record in one place of what was tweaked when in case a tweak goes really bad and I need to backtrace what and where I messed things up.

I use a post-it note stuck to the lid of my laptop to remind me to change settings back. A lot of us are getting old! ;)

Ah, but the question is....the settings to what? That's when you know you are really getting old. ;)

Like Keyzick (and Scumby), I'll make changes if I didn't read the league closely enough, or if my team isn't functioning as I envisioned. I'll also do so if a better player becomes available, or if I feel an available player is a better fit against my league.

Since I've been playing on-line since the beginning, I had forgotten if I had made more or less roster changes on my successful teams in the past. A quick scan showed many of my winning teams in every league had roster changes:

2001 team--102 wins, 8 moves: http://onlinegames.strat-o-matic.com/team/506978
2001 team--95 wins, 11 moves: http://onlinegames.strat-o-matic.com/team/515394
2002 team--97 wins, made finals, 4 moves: http://onlinegames.strat-o-matic.com/team/540864
2002 team--96 wins, made finals, 5 moves: http://onlinegames.strat-o-matic.com/team/558653
2003 team--88 wins, made finals, 13 moves: http://onlinegames.strat-o-matic.com/team/852402
2003 team--91 wins, 3 moves: http://onlinegames.strat-o-matic.com/team/872928
2004 team--Champs, 90 wins, 15 moves: http://onlinegames.strat-o-matic.com/team/1072993
2004 team--89 wins, made playoffs, 9 moves: http://onlinegames.strat-o-matic.com/team/1083361
2005 team--Champs, 90 wins, 12 moves: http://onlinegames.strat-o-matic.com/team/1143011

To skip to the nearer present, this pattern of making roster moves to help my teams succeed continued into the 10's:

2010 team--Champs, 88 wins, 4 moves: http://onlinegames.strat-o-matic.com/team/364479
2011 team--Champs, 91 wins, 9 moves: http://onlinegames.strat-o-matic.com/team/386123
2012 team--PC Tourney league champs, 2 moves: http://onlinegames.strat-o-matic.com/team/1109609
2013 team--92 wins, 6 moves: http://onlinegames.strat-o-matic.com/team/1379048

So, like a lot of managers, I not only didn't damage my teams by making roster moves, I helped them win by doing so. I respectively made 15, 12, and 9 moves in three of my championship teams above. So, not only can roster moves help a team win, numerous moves can do so as well. I certainly wouldn't advocate making moves for the sake of making them. I would also advise prudence in making them. However, my experience (as shown above), and the experience of other successful managers on this thread, shows roster moves can be a helpful, if not vital, element in a team's success.

Show me one MLB team that used just 25 guys during a season, a good manager should always be looking to improve team.
Great example is in a league going on now.
Manager cuts Wade Davis 3-4 6.35 1.97. Since I am always watching I jumped on Davis right away, thought he would fit my park and most of all an improvement over Clay Buchholz 3-3 5.64 1.30
Davis has gone 7-1 2.02 1.01 The team 24-15 in 1st place at the time and still is, winning or losing you should always be looking to improve.

Oh yeah...as mentioned by a couple others...I always keep an eye on recent transactions...you never know when a someone will drop a player that doesn't work for them, but may be an upgrade for you.

What about baserunning? I can see on my team page how many opportunities I have had for each player and how many advancements as well as how many outs each player has made.

Is there an easy way to see how I am doing in these categories compared with rest of team. Not sure I see these stats in any of the team/league display pages.

Other than general philosophy and a generic got a lot of speedsters think I will be aggressive, or got a lot of power hitters, think I will be conservative are there any guidelines you use to determine if your team baserunning settings should be adjusted?

I, too, have struggled with how best to interpret the baserunning stats - especially for speed teams where you may have baserunning set to aggressive or more. A quick comparison of the stats you posted earlier to some of my recent teams suggest that yours are pretty good - especially the 56 advanced to 5 out. What do you have your baserunning set to?

I have found that benching the Inj-3 and Inj-4 guys when I have clinched a spot in the playoffs, and then forgetting to put them back in for the playoffs to be an example of what not to do.
