Thx! Is that the Comerica team you posted earlier, or are you talking about another team?

On the last day of 2013...

'12 93-69 CHAMPS!
'11 100-62 Lost Semis
'10 96-66 Lost Semis
'09 97-65 Lost Semis
'08 81-81 Lost Semis
'07 87-75 Lost Finals
'06 88-74 Lost Semis
'05 ?? (No manager ratings and no post I can find!)
'04 100-62 Lost Semis

Well, since Jeep wouldn't let me win the Finals in '07, it took nine tries to finally call the shot. It wasn't for lack of trying though - that's a .573 average winning pct and quite a few playoff opportunities. All in all I don't think it's too bad a showing, considering the obvious potential for complete and total humiliation involved.

Anyway, esp for any newer players following this thread, I hope I demonstrated a solid veteran sample strategy to help get you started with SOM Online.

If you want to see the old Secret Formula posts in more detail, go to the General Strategy Forum where Palmtana itemized them on page one of the General Strategy/Newbie Advice Thread.

Happy New Year all!

Best record I've ever had. Of interest to me is the fact that on the pitching staff, the money closely follows the innings pitched. Atchison was injured THREE separate times or his IP total would have been higher

This team was my first attempt at a "long" lineup of mid-priced hitters...currently in first place, looking promising. The only outlier in the pricing was at catcher, where i had targeted Mauer.

I picked Fenway for my park, with the theory that a long lineup of hitters with high OBP should generate runs (benefitting from Fenway's high BP singles), and weakens opponents who load up with high BPHR hitters, since it seems the majority of managers try to load up with sluggers. Given Fenway's slant to righties, Konerko was the only power hitter I went after, knowing he usually goes undrafted.

Of course I was luckily able to put together 2's at ss, 2b, and cf, which was another goal going into this. Pitching-wise, I wanted the one big middle ining guy (Atchison), along with the best SPs available, with low to no right-handed BPHR. Thornton was a post waivers, best reliever left, but he's done ok.

Terry101's redonkulous Event 5 tour team http://onlinegames.strat-o-matic.com/team/1114483 with 228 net runs is the best I've seen this card set. It's also a Fenway team.

To me, there seems to be a certain nuance to Fenway that I can't quite figure out. I did start a Fenway team recently that's doing okay early on: http://onlinegames.strat-o-matic.com/team/1121213 , but my previous efforts were not very strong.

Somewhere back in the middle of this, I mentioned finding good teams and basically plagiarizing them, maybe adding some personal tweaks, to get a feel for team-building. This team http://onlinegames.strat-o-matic.com/team/1108310
definitely caught my eye with 205 net runs to the positive. It took me three tries (trust me, the other two were busts), but then I put this one up: http://onlinegames.strat-o-matic.com/team/1116832 . Shows you what HAL's love in one run games can do for your record. This was my $40+ mil pitching staff anti-Secret Formula team. Lost in the Finals. Ugh.

These high-dollar pitching staff teams can be pretty formidable. Helium has trotted out a few of these with some pretty decent success. Interesting enough though, I have not seen one of these teams win a ring. This is a bit odd, because oftentimes the playoffs are decided by the better pitching staffs. Go figure.

All in all though, I'm glad to see some of these experiments are working out for you guys! :D
