Extra No's.

We already decided Dunlap was ineligible back in 19.2. We are accepting nominations from the American and National leagues only. I will clarify that in the parameters going forward.

Thanks,
Bill

I want to make it clear that despite the sentiments set forth below, I have no problem personally with Bill or Andy (or any other community member who agrees with them), who do a fabulous job administering the new card process and are truly an asset to the ATG community. We have nothing more than a policy disagreement, and I remain grateful for their massive contributions to the ATG game, which has become vastly more enjoyable as a result of their time, knowledge and insight in the new card selection process.

I've gone back and read the 19.2 topic regarding 1884 Fred Dunlap. It appears to have been a knee jerk reaction and ill considered decision based upon his extreme stats, which BTW, are arguably less impressive than highly used pre-1900 players 1894 Hugh Duffy and 1873 Ross Barnes (who wasn't even on a team with major league status), and ignored the 50+ year old decision of a panel of MLB experts and historians that the 1884 Union Association was Major League Baseball. Moreover, since the 19.2 decision was made nearly two years ago things have changed, as since then Dunlap's 1884 Maroons teammate, Charlie Sweeney, was given an ATG card, with arguably equally extreme pitching stats. To say that Sweeney somehow snuck in as justification to deny Dunlap a card is inconsistent and makes a mockery of the selection process.

Contrary to the opinions of the self appointed guardians of the sanctity of the ATG game who have opposed and ruled against 1884 Fred Dunlap's ballot eligibility, the NL and AL have no monopoly on major league baseball status, and MLB long ago conferred major league status on the American Association (1882-91), Union Association (1884), Players’ League (1890), Federal League (1914-15) and, most recently, seven Negro Leagues (approximately 3400 players), including the Negro National League (I) (1920-31), the Eastern Colored League (1923-28), the American Negro League (1929), the East-West League (1932), the Negro Southern League (1932), the Negro National League (II) (1933-48) and the Negro American League (1937-48).

Despite arguments that his stats are extreme or an outlier (which can be said about numerous ATG cards) 1884 Fred Dunlap meets the criteria of ballot eligibility as "All MLB cards from 1871-2019 are eligible per Strat" and "300 PA". It was a bad decision in 2019 to rule Dunlap ineligible for a mere ballot position in a pending card add and it is a bad decision now and smacks of an ad hoc decision and making up the rules as we go along.

1884 Fred Dunlap should be on the ballot and the entire SOM ATG community should have the opportunity to decide whether he is eligible to be part of the ATG card set.
