Card App Recommendations

PostThu Feb 20, 2020 12:32 pm

I’ve spent a lot of time this month on the card app looking for gems and upgrades. And I mean a lot of time because it crashes CONSTANTLY. We can study all the raw statistics numbers we want, but unless we are looking at the actual cards we are just guessing. Thoughts going forward....

All numbers are 10/10 OB/SLG/OPS

As Gordon Gecko said, let's treasure "the value of information. And how to get it!"

CATCHER THOUGHTS

We don’t have Mickey Cochrane’s best card (1933)
Current PHA 1931 C1(-3)4 T 7 pb 2 2 inj (15 game) L 374/521/895 R 526/740/1.26
1932 PHA 518 AB 100 BB 2 inj (3 game max) 1(-3)2 T3 pb1 lf/cf/rf 4(5)12 L 472/595/1.06 R 489/640/1.12
1933 PHA 429 AB 106 BB 2 inj (15 game) C1(-3)3 T 4 pb 1 L 576/653/1.23 R 596/703/1.30
1935 DETROIT (would really help this franchise) 411 AB 96 BB 2 inj (15 game) 1(-3)4 T5 pb2 L 563/530/1.09 R 570/544/1.15

Shockingly, we don’t haveYogi Berra as a “1” A few to consider
current 1950 2(-2)8 T17 pb2 L 384/571/956 R 378/698/1.07
1953 503AB 50 BB 1 inj c1(-1)5 T13 pb4 L 380/526/907 R 382/750/1.13
1954 584 AB 56 BB 1 inj C1(-3)4 T13 pb2 3b437 L 380/493/873 R 408/598/1.00
1955 541 AB 60 BB 1 inj c1(-3)7 T 20 pb 1 L 386/538/925 R 332/507/839

I am also shocked to see that Thurman Munson has a few "1s" to consider. The "Bronx Zoo" book describes how Munson always hated that Fisk was considered the superior defensive catcher, so Thurman would intentionally drop third strikes so he could get statistical credit for the PO.

current 1977 2(-1)4 T9 pb3 595 AB 39 BB L313/496/809 R 400/565/965
1973 1(-3)4 T12 pb3 519 AB 48 BB L 492/805/1.29 R 366/505/871 [good platoon option]
1975 1(-3)10 T16 pb3 1b425 3b465 lf/rf4(2)25 597 AB 45 BB L 402/413/816 R 386/473/859

2012 Carlos Ruiz PHI C1(-1)7T3PB3 1R 372 AB 29 BB 4 inj L 446/609/1.05 R 457/695/1.15 [UPDATE: ADDED IN ATG9]

1955 Stan Lopata PHILLIES Huge upgrade available c4(+1)2 t5 pb 6 1b410 6L
303 AB 58 BB 2 inj L 509/1.02/1.53 R 407/504/912

OUTFIELDERS

Mickey Mantle played RF in 1962. He was MVP and led league in obp, slg, ops, ops+ CF1(-3)8 RF 1(-3)8 2R BUT 3 inj 499 AB + BB (15 game). No card reading because the app is a basic card only, with no BP Single or HR

How about Mickey as a shortstop. Would you play a 448 with these numbers? 1955 led league in obp, slg, ops, ops+ CF 2(-4)2 ss448 3L L 606/1.04/1.64 R 465/752/1.21

What about a 9L Mickey Mantle? 1964 303 423 591 1015 led in obp and ops and ops+ cf 3(-3)7 rf307 lf 307 9L 564 AB + BB 1 INJ L 667/1.28/1.95 R .378/549/.928

I have been researching Kaline to get a card that won’t sit on the waiver wire.
Current 1955 card L 546/705/1.25 R 519/733/1.25.
1959 is cf 1(-4)5 rf 105 5L L565/975/1.54 R474/592/1.06

You want to help out the Twins franchise?
Delahanty 1902 WASH 473 ab 62 bb led league in ba ob slg, ops ops+ lf/rf 1(-3)14 cf 214 1b330 2L 4-6,12/-(18-13)
L 595/825/1.42 R 534/703/1.23 STL A*

Jimmy Sheckard Current 1905 L 434/464/899 R 433/466/900
1901 BRO led league in slugging
Lf 1(1)22 cf3(1)22 rf2(1)22 3b465 L 486/694/1.18 R 495/730/1.22

Ken Griffey as a RED In 2005 (946 OPS) he was a cf3(-1)4 1R. But in 2000 (942 OPS) for CIN he was a 1(-2)6 1R. Makes all the difference.

Al Bumbry
current 1983 378 AB 31 BBlf 3(2)6 cf4(2)6 STL 2-5,12/-(16-12) 1-15 L WEAK 222/052/280 R WEAK 336/390/726
current 1982 562 AB 44 BB lf cf 4(2)8 STL 2-5/-(15-11) 1-15 L WEAK 256/272/528 R WEAK 316/385/702
1980 645 AB 78 BB Cf 2(1)5 STL 2-5,12/-(19-13) 1-17 L WEAK 366/344/710 R 444/497/941

First Base

Dave Magadan no card 1990 NYM 1b303 3b412 L 369/345/714 629/695/1.32 (previously nominated and not voted in, but he’s worth another look)

I couldn’t resist looking up this guy’s card. Sudaharu Oh 1969 L 452 ab 111 bb 1 inj
L 600/893/1493 R 659/1.23/1.89

Dick Allen 1972 is a 1b308, not415, and he and his card deserves that upgrade. [UPDATE: CHANGED IN ATG9]

Beau Bell
Current rf 3(0)6 1b422 L 353/387/740 R 360/473/834
1936 SLB 676 AB + BB rf 308(0) 1b 330 lf308 cf408 L 461/572/1.03 R 444/551/995

Some dead ends.

I tried to find a 1 for Musial - no.

A 1 (or a 1b2) for Heilmann – no.

A 2 for Teddy Ballgame – no.

A 2 for Manny Ramirez – no.

A 1 or 2 for Al Rosen – no.

Jimmy Foxx started out playing a lot as a catcher – nothing at all playable there.

A 3 for Hank Greenberg – no.

A 3 for Ralph Kiner – no.

Lave Cross has one card 1904 689 ops but in 1894 he had an OPS of 950 as a catcher, ss and 2b – but his ratings are c 4(4)6 t8 pb 18 ss460 2b471 1L.

Hal Trosky has slightly better hitting years, but still a 4.

Bob Johnson PHA 1939 had a great hitting year, 338/440/553/993 156ops+ [current ops 911] but his fielding was atrocious lf 413(+5) rf 413 cf 413 2b430

Victor Martinez 2014 no card MVP2 335/409 (led league)/565 (974 ops led league) But horrible defense 1b4e15 c5(+2)e16 T20

Milton Bradley 12 years no card 2008 TEX 321/436/563/ 999 414 ab 80 bb LF/RF 4(0)25 2 inj 3L

Thank you Steve. If you would like me to look up someone let me know. If I can get to it before my subscription runs out I'd be happy to.

Yeah, from running his stats, his problem in usable seasons is usually the gopherball
