Pre War Outfielders-- NO CARD Edition

PostMon Feb 25, 2019 9:53 pm

Many have said that we don't know what we are getting when we nominate cards, so I've taken some time to put some stats together from some cards, using Diamond Dope and Veterans 1975 for the park, since it's kind of neutral (10,10,10,10). I asked Bill for his permission/blessing to do this. So I'll be posting some card add ideas, thoughts, etc to hopefully keep interest up and give folks some stuff to actually discuss on the boards.

1942 Wally Judnich, SLB, Bats-L, 1R Balance, CF/LF/RF-2(-1)e4
LH--3.8 2b, 1.4 3b, 4.6 HR, 19 BB 332/456/563, 1.019 OPS
RH--4.3 2b, 1.5 3b, 5 HR, 19 BB 370/487/623, 1.110 OPS
After 3 seasons was on his way to a strong career, then lost 3 years to WWII and was never the same. Good combination of power and OBP, can play all 3 OF spots

1938 Johnny Rizzo, PIT, Bats-R, 6L Balance, LF-3(0)e17
LH--8.6 2b, 2.1 3b, 11.8 HR, 20 BB 531/627/1090, 1.716 OPS
RH--4.9 2b, 2.3 3b, 6.6 HR, 11 BB 313/396/621, 1.016 OPS
His Rookie Year was a strong one, finished 6th in MVP Voting, Look at those numbers vs LHP Again.....

1937 Moose Solters, CLE, Bats-R, 1L Balance, LF/CF/RF-4(0)15
LH--8.5 2b, 2.6 3b, 6.9 HR, 3 BB 389/412/720, 1.132 OPS
RH--8 2b, 2.5 3b, 6.5 HR, 3 BB 370/394/683, 1.076 OPS
Good bat to add to Pre War pool

1921 Whitey Witt, PHA, Bats-L, E Balance, LF/RF/CF-3(+2)13
LH--4.2 2b, 1.8 3b, 0.3 HR, 13 BB, 384/463/475, .938 OPS
RH--4 2b, 1.8 3b, 0.3 HR, 13 BB, 392/471/481, .952 OPS

1940 Debs Garms, PIT, Bats-L, 2R Balance, 3b-4e25, LF/CF/RF-4(+2)e16
LH--6.4 2b, 2.5 3b, 1.7 HR, 4 BB 380/409/540, .948 OPS
RH--8 2b, 3.3 3b, 2 HR, 4 BB 475/500/674, 1.174 OPS
I like Garms, led league in batting. Only usable at 3b.

1929 Harvey Hendrick, BKN, Bats-L, 1R Balance, LF/CF/RF-4(+1)e11, 1b-3e27, SS-4e88, 3b-4e65
LH--6.4 2b, 1.8 3b, 5.2 HR, 6 BB 399/48/651, 1.088 OPS
RH--7.3 2b, 1.8 3b, 5.7 HR, 6 BB 444/480/721, 1.201 OPS
Only usable at 1b, I think you can get those numbers from quite a few current 1b.

1925 Al Wingo, DET, Bats-L, E Balance, LF/RF/CF-4(0)e11
LH--8.3 2b, 3 3b, 0.5 HR, 18 BB 478/569/677, 1.241 OPS
RH--8.3 2b, 3 3b, 1 HR, 18 BB 478/569/671, 1.241 OPS
His ONLY year as a starter. I tend to shy away from things like that. A guy who had one season compared to Heinie Manush or somebody who did it season after season...…..

Not a useful card, and was a part time starter in 1942. Never had a meaningful season again. NO

1921 Austin McHenry, STL, Bats-R, E Balance, CF/LF/RF-2(-2)e14
LH--7.8 2b, 1.2 3b, 5.5 HR, 6 BB 433/470/697, 1.167 OPS
RH--7.6 2b, 1.3 3b, 5.5 HR, 6 BB 428/465/692, 1.157 OPS

Five seasons into a promising career, McHenry started having trouble with his eyesight in the 1922 season. The Cardinals sent him home to rest, and a brain tumor was later detected. McHenry died a couple months later.
The guy was a lifetime .302 hitter in 4+ seasons, and I think that this would be a good add.
