If you have read Glory of their Times then you know that the story of specs Toporcer is a sad one...should be represented... I did like the suggestion of Brett 76 in one of the posts... traynor 1923 led league with 19 triples... in hindsight would have chosen Tommy Harper, like Larry Parrish 1979...expos never get enough love.

While it's probably too late for this vote for Bill Melton, Rosie failed to note that in 1971 Melton led the A.L. in home runs, being the first player in White Sox history to do so. But the story doesn't end there. Melton hit two home runs in the second to last game of the 1971 season to tie future HOFer Reggie Jackson and Norm Cash for the A.L. home run lead. In the last game of the season, rookie Sox manager Chuck Tanner batted Melton lead off to get him more at bats in his attempt to overtake Jackson and Cash. Melton responded with a home run in his second at bat to edge Jackson and Cash for the home run crown, 33-32! It was probably the only time in his MLB career that Melton batted lead off.

Melton injured his back in November, 1971, rupturing a couple of discs in an off season roofing accident, and tried to play through it in the 1972 season, but was eventually put on the DL, missing the rest of the season. There was no arthroscopic surgery back then, and Melton, knowing that back surgery would end his career, opted for disc shrinkage treatments that weren't yet FDA approved, so he received treatment in Canada. Although he was able to resume playing big league baseball, his power never returned and his fielding suffered. You can hear Melton tell the story at the link below:

http://www.nbcsports.com/chicago/video/ ... ton-part-2

I happen to think that the 1971 card is a much better card than Melton's $1.82 mil 1969 card and that he would be a good power option at 3B, especially in caps of $100 mil or less.

We should have nominated Gaetti's 88 card. It's a 1e10 and hits righties better than the 86 card.
