Rosie-

The original request was to come up with 15 players to be voted on for 10 slots--
have no idea what you are now asking me to do.

What I would like to avoid is introducing cards of players that basically perform like Ted Williams but aren't Ted. So if I said, gimme 15 high end cards for 5-10 spots who would they be? Just trying to get a sense of what these cards might look like.

tks

Salty - I went back to double check my post just to make sure I didn't screw up. 5-10 spots. Off your list already in are...House, Heilmann and Sisler. There's also the potential for the franchise guys or the 60-99 grouping to pull in more of your desired high end players. We just have limited spots for many agendas.

Listen, since you already have a bunch of pitchers-- what I would do is now simply submit the hitters that are left for the 4 slots.
It would have saved some time if you had told me that Sisler, HH for example were automatically in from the last addition.

1. Goose Goslin 1928
2. Matt Kemp 2011
3. Chipper Jones 2007
4. Jose Bautista 2011
5. JD Drew 2004
6. Rogers Hornsby 1925
7. Hank Thompson 1953
8. Bill Dickey 1936
9. Mike Napoli 2011

I hadn't determined they were until today about Noon PT. Once the card allocations are set I then take a look at the previous vote and see which cards just missed that fit our current parameters. As you can imagine this isn't any of our day jobs.

Let's slap some leather. Below are the best offensive years for players who were considered outstanding fielders:

1897 George Davis, SS, Giants .353 10 135 .410 .509 .918. Led the league in RBI. This was Davis' first year as a full time SS and these are by far his best offensive numbers in 12 seasons with shortstop as his primary position. Davis was widely regarded to be the best defensive shortstop of his day. Like many deadball era infielders, he made a ton of errors, 62 to be exact. His only other card, from 1901, is an e26, although he made 45 errors that season. SOM adjusts errors for deadball fielders. For the 1901 card, his errors were about 58% of his actual total. If the same percentage is used for the 1897 card, Davis would be about an e36.

1926 Johnny Mostil, CF, White Sox .328 4 41 .415 .467 .882, 41 DO, 15 TR, 2nd in AL MVP voting. Led AL in HBP (10) & SBs (35) for the second straight year; Career highs in HITS, BA, DO, OBP & OPS. Led AL in CFer PO. From 1921-1926, the fleet footed Mostil was arguably the best defensive center fielder of his era, and legend has it that he is the only center fielder in major league history to catch a foul ball for a put out! The diminutive Mostil had a 10 year career with the White Sox, plagued by injuries and mental illness, but emerged as a star in 1926. Mostil has just 1 card (1923), which represents his WORST offensive season during the period 1921-1926, with his lowest BA and OPS in that span. Any of his other 5 seasons during that time would have been better, but 1926 was his best.

2000 Andruw Jones, CF, Braves .303 36 104 .366 .541 .907 21 SBs. Career highs in HITS, BA, OBP, TB and 2nd career highs for SLG, OPS & OPS+. Gold Glove winner. CF 1(-3)

2000 Charles Johnson, C, White Sox .304 31 91 .379 .582 .961. Career highs in HITS, BA, HR, RBI, OBP, SLG, OPS & OPS+ & TB. HOFer Johnny Bench, arguably the best catcher of his generation, NEVER had a season where he hit 30+ HRs & batted .300. C 1(-2).

2007 Aaron Rowand, CF, Phillies .309 27 89 .374 .515 .889. Career highs in HITS, DO, HR, RBI, OBP, TB. Near career highs in BA, SLG, OPS & OPS+. Gold Glove winner. CF 1(0)e2

2008 Nick Markakis RF, Orioles .306 20 87 .406 .491 .897 (bulletproof!). Career highs in BA, RUNS, DO (48!) OBP, SLG, OPS & OPS+. RF 1(-3)e3

2008 or 2009 Kevin Youkilis, Red Sox, 1B & 3B
2008 .312 29 115 .312 .390 .569 .959. Career highs in HITS, BA, DO, HR, RBI, SLG, TB. 1B 1e6; 3B 3e17

2009 .305 27 94 .305 .413 .548 .961 Career highs in RUNS, OBP & OPS. 1B 1e2; 3B 2e12

2009 Jason Bartlett, SS, Rays .320 14 66 .389 .490 .879 30 SBs. Career highs in virtually every major offensive category. The Rays have just 5 other player cards. Bartlett would complete their infield. Good lead off man. SS 1e25.

2010 Alexei Ramirez SS, White Sox .282 18 70 .313 .431 .744. Career highs in RUNS. Near career highs in HITS, BA, HR, SLG, OPS & OPS+. Silver Slugger. SS 1e21

2011 Jacoby Ellsbury, CF, Red Sox .321 32 105 .376 .552 .928 (bulletproof!). Led AL in total bases. Career highs in virtually every major offensive category. Gold Glove and Silver Slugger. CF 1(0)e0

For pitchers, how about the long neglected Orval Overall?

1909 Orval Overall, Cubs, 20-11 1.42 .996

In a league that included HOFers Christy Mathewson and 3 Finger Brown, and Howie Camnitz's best season, Overall led the league with 9 shutouts, 205 strikeouts, strikeouts per 9 innings at 6.5 and lowest opponents batting average at .198. In addition, he was in the top 5 in many other pitching categories, including WAR, wins, ERA, WHIP, hits per 9 innings, saves, strikeout to walk ratio, HR ratio, etc.

Overall was a right-handed curveball specialist who compiled a lifetime 108-71 record and 2.23 ERA, the eighth best ERA in major-league history.

A similar case could be made for Jack Tesreau, who has no card (Overall has one). 119-72 2.43 all-time.

1914, went 26-10 2.37, 6th in MVP voting. 6.6 H/9IP.
1915,, finished third in the league in WHIP (1.013 in 300+ innings).

Bernie W.

The short answer is I had already looked at all the cards you mentioned between 07-14

Don't think any of them would get used other than maybe a backup in a higher cap league.
Their stats might seem really good, but if the card doesn't reflect that then its just not going to play at
that level.
