Next addition, a few more high cap cards...

PostFri Mar 10, 2017 11:45 am

okay,

so last couple of additions seem to have focused on adding franchise and mid level players (which is fine, those are needed for some kinds of leagues);
there have been a few usable high cap guys but not many.

There are more guys that would be very playable at high caps and it would be great to have a good number of these added in the next one.

Thank you,

come again.

I think we should strive for a mix of likely prices in each add...something for everyone that way, in theory...

I don't know of a more high cap card than Schupp. He's unusable at 100m or below.....

here are my 2 answers:

1) We haven't been striving for high cap cards the past 2 drafts-- otherwise we'd have more than 3 or 4 usable ones we got in the past 2 addition-- note, these aren't necessarily 3 or 4 GOOD additions, just usable ones.

2) Schupp is way overpriced imo (he should be between Babe Adams and Pedro) and thats what makes him unusable at lower caps more than anything else.
Also thats exactly ONE card.

C'mon guys-- the past 2 additions we've hardly had any good high cap cards while we've had many of the other additions--
so to now say we should be trying to satisfy everyone sort of doesn't seem fair.

What are some more high cap cards that don't replicate players already in the set? I ask this not for argument's sake, but actually for information. Are we talking another Ruth card? I just wonder if there are that many more difference-maker cards that don't replicate players already in the set. Name some ideas that would be what you're looking for.

As a personal preference for me (that's redundant), I want the highest $$ cards to be the Hall of Fame best, not just some nice mix of great numbers. I don't think Ross Barnes has any business being more expensive than Joe Morgan, just as I wish Luis Gonzalez wasn't the 4th most-expensive LFer, bested only by Barry Bonds, Ted Williams, and Al Simmons high card. That ship has sailed, however.

Id consult George Bernard(Bill) on this--
he would have a list of guys who would be appropriate, although for example the 7R cano card (yes we have a not so good cano already) comes to mind right away. As do a few other cards from the 20XX series.

There are definitely more that would work.

Luis gonzalez is another example of a very very overpriced card--
with his fielding and arm hes really only usable at DH for me, and while he has power won't hit for much average--
so think hes at least a mill overpriced.

I think for the high-cap leagues we should include more outstanding injury-prone players...team bench is so full

2012 Vitto
1999 Kendall (yes the card with a 6-inj--catching is the easiest to combine injury-prone players)
2011 Napoli
2010 Morneaau
2009 Youkilis (has a 3rd base card--this position is less deep in ATG)
1994 Belle
1994 Kevin Mitchell
1993 Rick Wilkins (maybe with the split he could be useful in lefty stadiums)

a few more from that set...

2012 Cano
2011 Bautista
2007 Chipper Jones
2013 Chris Davis
2007 Ryan Braun

just a few of the hitters that might work, there are tons of pitchers and closers

Thanks, Salty, for the vote of confidence. ;) Andy is probably right that many of the high-end cards would be from pre-existing names (or are those conditions?), but nonetheless there would be some great additions. The following names are listed strictly for their offensive potential:

1971 Hank Aaron .327/.410/.669 1B/RF
2000 Moises Alou .355/.416/.623 RF/LF
1958 Ernie Banks .313/.366/.614 SS (MVP)
2011 Jose Bautista .302/.447/.608 RF/3B (Aaron winner)
1998 Albert Belle .328/.399/.655 LF
2004 Barry Bonds .362/.609/.812 LF (MVP -- you could also include 1990, 2002 & 2003)
2007 Ryan Braun .324/.370/.634 3B
2010 Miquel Cabrera .328/.420/.622 1B (though a better case could be made for either 2011 & 2012)
2005 Tony Clark .304/.366/.636 1B
1895 Jack Clements .394/.446/.612 C
1895 Ed Delahanty .404/.500/.617 OF/SS/2B/3B
1936 Bill Dickey .362/.428/.617 C
2006 Jermaine Dye .315/.385/.622 RF
2007 Prince Fielder .288/.395/.618 1B (Aaron winner)
1933 Jimmie Foxx .356/.449/.703 1B/SS (MVP, Triple Crown)
1993 Andres Galarraga .370/.403/.602 1B (though probably tainted by Colorado affiliation)
1936 Lou Gehrig .354/.478/.696 1B (MVP)
2001 Jason Giambi .342/.477/.660 1B
1999 Brian Giles .315/.418/.614 CF/RF/LF (a 3 in center, a 2 in the corners)
1998 Juan Gonzalez .318/.366/.630 RF (MVP) (1993 & 1999 are possibiilities)
1928 Goose Goslin .379/.442/.614 OF
1935 Hank Greenberg .328/.411/.628 1B (MVP -- though 1937 is probably a better year)
1996 Ken Griffey .303/.392/.628 CF
1930 Chick Hafey .336/.407/.652 OF (though 1928 might have been his better all around year)
2006 Travis Hafner .308/.439/.659 1B
1923 Harry Heilman .403/.481/.632 OF/1B
2003 Todd Helton .358/.458/.630 1B
2000 Richard Hidalgo .314/.391/.636 CF/RF/LF
1925 Rogers Hornsby .403/.489/.756 2B (MVP, Triple Crown)
2007 Chipper Jones .337/.425/.604 3B (or 2001)
1894 Bill Joyce .355/.496/.648 3B
1947 Ralph Kiner .313/.417/.639 LF
1954 Ted Kluszewski .326/.407/.642 1B
2005 Derrek Lee .335/.418/.662 1B
1957 Mickey Mantle .365/.512/.665 CF (MVP -- also 1955 & 1962)
1995 Edgar Martinez .356/.479/.628 3B/1B
1954 Eddie Mathews .290/.423/.603 3B/LF (also 1955)
1939 Johnny Mize .349/.444/.626 1B
1930 Ed Morgan .349/.413/.601 1B/RF
2010 Justin Morneau .345/.437/.618 1B (a 5 injury -- but a sweet card)
1951 Stan Musial .355/.449/.614 lf/1B/CF/RF (also 1943 and 1954)
2011 Mike Napoli .320/.414/.631 C/1B
1930 Lefty O'Doul .383/.453/.604 LF
2006 David Ortiz .287/.413/.636 1B (plus 2004/2005/2016)
2007 Carlos Pena .282/.411/.627 1B
2003 Albert Pujols .359/.439/.667 LF/1B (Aaron winner -- 2004 possible too)
1999 Manny Ramirez .333/.442/.663 RF
1954 Dusty Rhodes .341/.410/.695 LF/CF/RF
1962 Frank Robinson .342/.421/.624 RF/LF
1996 Alex Rodriguez .358/.414/.631 SS (but also 2001 & 2002 Aaron winner both years plus 2000)
1924 Babe Ruth .378/.513/.739 RF/LF/CF (plus 1932)
1996 Gary Sheffield .314/.465/.624 RF
1927 Al Simmons .392/.436/.645 CF/LF/RF (1931 is pretty similar)
1954 Duke Snider .341/.423/.647 CF
1923 Tris Speaker .380/.469/.610 OF (1922 is pretty similar)
1973 Willie Stargell .299/.392/.646 LF
1895 Sam Thompson .392/.430/.654 OF
1930 George Watkins .373/.415/.621 RF/1B/LF/CF/2B
1972 Billy Williams .333/.398/.606 LF/1B
1949 Ted Williams .343/.490/.650 OF (MVP -- but don't forget the Triple Crown years 1942 & 1947)

So, as to be expected, from a strictly offensive point of view, lots of 1B and corner outfielders. I'll keep checking for middle infielders.
