ATG 16.2 Card Add Results & analysis (mine so could be bad)

PostThu Nov 10, 2016 5:48 am

Results listed below, top 12 Pitchers and top 13 Batters will be added to ATG. I took the 13th batter (Randy Braun) instead of Ted Abernathy as Braun doesn't yet have a card.

For the next add I think we should take the next 10 pitchers and next 15 hitters from this round of voting...

In some ways the voting process reminds me of the annual HOF vote. From that perspective, it is heartening that Elmer Flick seems poised to get in next time. I think that card could be a mid range, small ball dream card if appropriately priced. Conversely, I wonder if the bottom five vote getters should get dropped from the next round of voting. Just a thought.

Thrilled that Sam McDowell, Randy Johnson and Cy Williams all got in. On the other hand, Joe Carter? I get it if you need franchise cards but can't forsee him getting much use outside that context.

Agree with Druid - the majority of these adds are free agent list fodder with a few exceptions. Franchise league guys will be happy I suppose, but those of us who, for the most part, play ATG don't have a lot to interest us. Pricing will be the key (as always) for ultimate usability. I know I've said this before, but unless you are in unlimited or very high(200 mil +) leagues, guys like Mesa (endurance "1" studs) are useless. Again, my 2 centavos.

I can't be the only person playing in non-$200M leagues who likes to shop in the budget bin and in the dollar store. The current add system completely eliminates the addition of useful utility and platoon players, or +/- $2M players who have enough value to plug a hole and allow spending big bucks somewhere else.

I would love to either vote on full team season rosters that could be added, enriching the supply of subs and role players, or hold a draft where the nominees are likely to be valued at $2M or less.

I long for the 1980s Jeltz card with 2B-2, 3B-2, SS-2 and a little bit of onbase/extra base potential, and other utility surprises. New choices for a fourth outfielder. Modern-day subs who can play infield and outfield like the late lamented stunningly useful Jimmy Johnston card that was replaced with one that has no useful attributes whatsoever.

More scrubs please!!!!!

As it stands now we will be adding a full team come the 50 card add in the summer. My original suggestion was during the World Series but a few folks proposed pulling that into the larger add which makes sense.

But I fully recognize that that only sort of, and slowly at that, addresses the role player concern. Its a dilemma that should cause us to think of creative ways to revisit our goals with this process. Maybe there's a 25 card add each year with parameters like; sub .750 OPS or no better whip than 1.30. I would think those qualifiers would get us cards in the mid to low range that would work. But the trick is in the pricing and unless someone has a built or is willing to build a tool to project card values it will be a bit of throwing darts in the dark. Has anyone? I know a few of you are pretty good at guessing the ranges pre card roll out.

A real quick look at ATG shows this:

1,290 batter cards under $2 mil
860 is the highest OPS
39/1290 have an OPS greater than 800

So 46% of the ATG batter cards are under $2 mil. Obviously this quick bit of research doesn't take into account playability but there are a fair share of low end cards to choose from.

I'm happy to support this direction if it has broad support. Maybe for our next add we include 5 utility type players that we think will be in the sub $2 range with usability and assess once they are priced. I'd hate to commit an entire add to this direction and completely whiff.

Thoughts?

In my humble opinion when it comes to adding a full team I think the conversation should start with the 2008 Rays. They were shutout on this add and have a grand total of 2 cards in the set!

We added 2 from CO and another from AZ and one from FL in this round, as well as 3 from TOR and 2 from SEA. Still no love for the Rays here...

Thanks,
Bill

I appreciate your TB Ray drum beat! I noticed also that your suggestion of the next card add would include Longoria, Crawford and Balfour. Well played! 2008 Rays are on the list for team add consideration.
