Below is my analysis of our adds across three dimensions and two timelines.

The last grouping excludes the 2008 TB Rays, I wanted the % of the individual cards added. Also don't try and add the %'s up in the BY POSITION matrix (that means you Bill), because they won't. I included any listed position for everyone but CF, SS or 2B figuring we'd play a guy with a 4 at 3B, 1B, LF and RF but wouldn't at CF, SS or 2B.

Initial take:
1. We are doing pretty damn good at focusing on players with zero or one card in ATG
2. We should consider a positional add of 3B, SS, CF and C
3. Older should be the new Newer, we have been heavy on the more recent players

BY POSITION/ALL ADDS/% OF 200/LAST 4 ADDS/% of 125
1B 33 17% 17 14%
2B 20 10% 14 11%
3B 14 7% 9 7%
SS 9 5% 6 5%
CF 13 7% 7 6%
LFRF 50 25% 32 26%
C 9 5% 7 6%
SP 44 22% 26 21%
RP 31 16% 25 20%
PURE RP 26 13% 22 18%

BY PREV CARDS/% of 200/LAST 4 ADDS/% of 125
0 111 56% 79 63%
1 41 21% 18 14%
2 31 16% 15 12%
3 15 8% 12 10%
4 2 1% 1 1%

BY DECADE/% of 175/LAST 4 ADDS/% of 100
PRE 1900 2 1% 0 0%
1900-09 3 2% 3 3%
1910-19 3 2% 2 2%
1920-29 11 6% 7 7%
1930-39 4 2% 2 2%
1940-49 4 2% 2 2%
1950-59 15 9% 9 9%
1960-69 11 6% 9 9%
1970-79 18 10% 9 9%
1980-89 12 7% 6 6%
1990-99 23 13% 13 13%
2000-09 45 26% 30 30%
2010+ 24 14% 8 8%

As always, open to others interpretation of the data.

Rosie,
You are really, really good at all aspects of this process —planning, analysis, clarity, managing expectations, producing decisive results! Just really, really, good! :!: :D :!:

Thanks for all of your hard work!

I'd certainly be on board with a positional add of 3B, SS, CF and C. Hopefully with the bulk of the add being from pre-2000.

Thanks again Rosie for all of your efforts.

Thanks guys you're kind to say.

I think we breath now, collect the feedback and plan on starting the vetting in December in prep for an early January vote.

Let me join the chorus of huzzahs for Rosie!

For next time (or some other time), I'd like to see:

1/ the continuation of adds to franchises that hadn't had many adds in the past year (like we did this time with D'backs, Royals, Orioles...)

2/ voting by groups of years (e.g. 1900-1935, 1936-1970, 1971-2006 -- though I really would like to include pre-1900 players!)

3/ a vote for one MVP year and one Cy Young year (Rosie could make a short list of 5-7 for each that we would vote on or vote by position
c--1951/1954 Berra, 1951/1955 Campanella, 1928/1934 Cochrane, 1935 Hartnett, 1963 Howard, 1938 Lombardi, 1976 Munson
1b--1967 Cepeda, 1913 Daubert, 1933 Foxx, 1974 Garvey, 1936 Gehrig, 1935 Greenberg, 1985 Mattingly, 1979 Stargell
2b--1912 Doyle, 1914 Evers, 1931 Frisch, 1937 Gehringer, 1925 Hornsby
3b--2012 Cabrera, 1991 Pendleton, 1986 Schmidt, 2016 Bryant
ss--1958 Banks, 1995 Larkin, 1925 Peckinpaugh
lf--1990/2002/2003 Bonds, 1973 Rose
cf--1947 Dimaggio, 1962 Mantle, 2014/2016 Trout
rf--1966 Clemente, 1998 Gonzalez, 2004 Guerrero,1958 Jensen, 1943 Musial)

(FYI, Cy Young years still outstanding -- 1987/1998/2001 Clemens, 1983 Denny, 2012 Dickey, 1979 Flanagan, 1970 Gibson, 1996 Hentgen, 2010 Hernandez, 1983 Hoyt, 1974 Hunter, 1971 Jenkins, 2000 Johnson, 2011/2014 Kershaw, 2015 Keuchel, 2014 Kluber, 1966 Koufax, 2008 Lincecum, 1977 Lyle, 1967 McCormick, 1993 McDowell, 1973/1976 Palmer, 1978 Gaylord Perry, 1970 Jim Perry, 2016 Porcello, 1985 Saberhagen, 2016 Scherzer)

Thanks again Rosie.

I think that as a matter of course the first 6 adds each year should be the previous season's 2 MVPs, 2 Cy Youngs, and 2 ROYs. No qualification, no debate.

Thoughts?

Well, I'm against any active players being in ATG (unless we KNOW they are at the downside of their career, IE Cano, Beltran etc) so there's that.

Just to clarify , I've accepted the fact that we're doing this, but I'm in no hurry to escalate that group by any kind of "automatic" entry.

For team adds, the choice to add the ‘08 Rays this year was an excellent one. I think the expansion teams should each get a team add before anything else is done on this front. Let the D-Backs, Marlins and Rockies each get one team. This will satisfy the franchise league players. There are many that enjoy that format, and until these franchises have a complete team, it remains very challenging to use these three. It is a shame this can’t be done faster.

While I recognize this concept has merit, we have so many other holes to fill from years gone by that active players are lower on the current priority list. As always happy to engage in a deeper discussion if there's passionate interest.
