I think the Computer manager is worse than the CD rom version---I guess its the same for everyone else, but it doesn't seem like it to me---

I have some nice (overpriced really) pitching staffs lead by Medlen with over 4 ERA in a pitcher friendly park--I really don't know what to do other that set SP to F3 or so to keep them in the game, and the same for your good relievers, and set your best two RP for every role--but I really have issues with my starters being taken out too early, and starting with my poor relievers being used for one or two batters at the time until the entire pen is used, my relief is set to Normal, yet I get a lot of crooked innings put up against me in the 6th -7th innings--

Just in the last couple of days I've decided to set all my Starters and better Relief pitchers for very low F ratings--I tried this a little earlier and still got lots of runs scored against me--but I'm going to stick with it for the remainder of my season with a few teams for a larger sample.

Medlen should really only be taken out for Rodney or Kimbrell, he's THAT good!

I'm usually happy with my starters and bullpen . I'm on my iPhone for a while, but later today when I have full computer access I'll post some examples and tips from my experience.

As a quick response, I use "F8" together with "quick hook" settings for my favorite starters, but I use "slow hook" and no F settings for my favorite relief pitchers.

This team isn't a world beater - just about .500. It just seems to me to be a good example of what I like to do with pitchers' preferences, for you to think about and debate with me.

http://onlinegames.strat-o-matic.com/team/1104221

Price, David L S7* 2L F8 QuickHook
Weaver, Jered R S7 5L F8 QuickHook
Niemann, Jeff R S5 8R F8 QuickHook
Shields, James R S6* 1R F8 QuickHook
Fiers, Mike R S6 E QuickHook

Frieri, Ernesto R R1/C5 7L SlowHook
Howell, J.P. L R1 4L QuickHook AvoidRHB
Perkins, Glen L R1/C4 5L QuickHook AvoidRHB
Peralta, Joel R R1/C1 2L
McGee, Jake L R1/C0 9R SlowHook
Davis, Wade R R2 5L
Rodney, Fernando R R1/C6 E SlowHook

Closer Rodney
Closer Frieri
LH Specialist Perkins
Setup Rodney
Setup McGee
Tied & 9th+ Rodney
Tied & 9th+ McGee
Tied & Late Rodney
Tied & Late McGee
Middle Man Rodney
Middle Man McGee
Behind & Late Peralta
Behind & Late McGee
Mopup Peralta
Mopup Davis
LH Specialist Howell

On some teams, where my bullpen is far better than my starters, and fairly deep, I will set almost all of my starters to just "quick hook", with the idea of getting to my bullpen as quickly as possible. On this team, I decided not to take that approach. As it is, Rodney is still getting lots of innings. I could probably get McGee more innings if I did "quick hook" with my starting pitchers more than I am.

I know this sounds stupid as this point, but what exactly are these "F settings"?

Thanks,

Sure. Go to the Strat-o-matic Baseball Online page, and click "Start a New Team" in the far right corner.

Then you will be directed to a page to create a team name, managers name, and pick which Strat online set you wish to play with (2012, ATG7, etc). After doing this, go to the bottom of the page and click "Start Your Team".

You will be directed to a page which allows you to select the salary cap you wish to play with, then at the bottom of the page, click "Draft Your Team".

After you've drafted a team, place on them on your draft card in importance to you and save your draft list. Then pick a stadium and join a league. All leagues that coincide with your player set and salary cap will be listed. Click the on you wish to join and you're in.

The Auto-Draft does NOT involve bidding. Simply rank your players based on how important they are to you and the Auto-Draft will select the players on your draft card, provided someone hasnt ranked the saem player higher on their draft card.

The F settings are an added function that allows you to keep a pitcher in a game after he's started to fatigue, governed by his innings rating and pitch count. The lower your F number, i.e., F8 to F6, the longer he's allowed to stay in the game.

Beware, however: The greater a pitcher is fatigued, the more rolls are selected from the batter's card, with increasingly poorer pitching results. And fatigue is exponential, not unlike hurricane or tornado ratings. The difference between F9 and F8, for examine, might appear to be minor on the surface. In reality, however, the pitcher is twice as tired as he would be when pulled at F9, F8 four times as tired, etc.

The bottom line is that this is one of the bells and whistles in the program that you should avoid in general and experiment with ONLY if you've got a pitcher who's one of the most dominant in the game, like Walter Johnson or Pedro Martinez. If you add fatigue to most of the run-of-the-mill arms in this game, you'll get burned.
