What is the point of Pitcher Preferences?

PostFri Dec 01, 2017 11:14 am

I have a LH specialist that is coded for "quick hook" and "avoid RHB" and has the role of "LH Specialist". He is called into the game to get a LHB out in a big spot in the 7th, perfect...Then he stays in the next inning to face 6 RHB that go, "BB, BB, single, BB, single, double. That's not avoid RHB, LH specialist, and certainly not a quick hook...my god...I have two perfectly reliable setup men that could have pitched but instead I lost by 4 runs.

Add "max 1-2 innings" and it will work better

I would add aggressive to relief usage under team strategy as well. Who knows is it possible those other two relievers were tired? ALso if you assign too many roles Hal may interpret that you want to save your guys for set up. I find that using 1 closer 1 set up and always having 2-3 guys with ni designation works well.

It would greatly help HAL if you had 5-7 possible receivers. Four relievers does not give HAL many options.

Yes The AI Manager isn't the best I would fire the AI Manager but hopefully SOM can tweek it a little... EX for me I got Eckersley as closer but many times they failed to put him in the game. The platoon issue was good thing but the pitching managing by AI isn't up to par yet. PLEASE work it out.

I believe "Aggressive Relief" only applies to when starters get pulled, not relievers. And agree that giving HAL more options might lead to better results for what you're trying to do. Then again nothing is ever guaranteed with HAL.

This is copied directly from the CDROM help file:

DEFINING A LEFTY SPECIALIST

There are certain bullpen pitchers whose role is to be a "Lefty Specialist". These are usually left-handed pitchers who face one or two batters in real-life and are removed when facing most right-handed batters.

Real-life lefty specialists tend to pitch to left-handed batters about 40 to 50% of the time. If you wish to define a pitcher as a lefty specialist simple check on the following items:

- Avoid righties

- Quick Hook

- Maximum of 1 to 2 innings in relief

The combination of those switches will tell the computer manager that you are defining a Lefty Specialist. The computer will try to remove him vs. most right-handed batters. However, since a pitcher always needs to face a minimum of one batter this pitcher will probably face righties at least 50% of the time (just like real life).

I believe the inverse of this would work for a righty specialist as well.
