Moneyball 2021 Contract Offers

PostMon Mar 15, 2021 4:21 pm

Gentlemen,

It's time to make decisions about who you will keep and who you will cut for 2021. You will be making decisions about players who are under team control but not under contract in 2021. This means players who are either pre-arbitration or arbitration eligible in the 2021 column. Here is the relevant rule:

Section 9.07 OFFSEASON ACTIVITIES AND DEADLINES: ... (B) CONTRACT EXTENSION and ARBITRATION DECISIONS: Team owners have to make decisions about releasing players, offering contract extensions, or taking players to arbitration by MARCH 31st for the upcoming MLB season. If a player with an expiring contract is not offered a contract extension then he is considered to be released and becomes a free agent. If a player is under control but not eligible for arbitration then he is considered retained for another year unless he is actively released. If you wish to release a pre-arbitration player then you must make that decision by the March 31st deadline. Remember, these decisions affect player contracts for the upcoming MLB season and the subsequent SOM season, and do not impact the SOM card season about to be played.

Remember that players can be renewed for a season at the league minimum or their current salary, whichever is higher, or they can be offered a contract extension. Here is the minimum salary rule:

Section 9.05    MAJOR LEAGUE MINIMUM SALARIES: Players with less than 6 years of service time use the following contract schedule.

(a)     Up to 1 year (pre-arb 1): $500,000
(b)     Up to 2 years (pre-arb 2): $600,000
(c)     Up to 3 years (pre-arb 3): $700,000
(d)     Up to 4 years (arb 1): $2,000,000
(e)     Up to 5 years (arb 2): $3,000,000
(f)      Up to 6 years (arb 3): $4,000,000

If you renew are player in their ARB 3 year then they will become a free agent the following year.

If you choose not to cut a player or renew the player for the 2021 season, then you can offer them a contract extension. Here is the relevant contract extension rule:

Section 9.10    CONTRACT EXTENSIONS Teams wishing to extend the contract of a player can do so in two ways.

(a)     Extending Young Players: Players between 3-4 years of service time can be given a 4 year contract at the league average price for their primary position. The league average price is defined as the average price of the top 50% of players by salary at the same primary position on league 40 man rosters at the time of the contract offer, rounded down to the nearest whole number of players. This will eliminate their eligibility for the fifth and sixth year exceptions. Once a player has over 4 years of service time, they are no longer eligible for this extension.

(b)     Extending Players 2: Players with one year before free agency are eligible for an extension. Extensions must be at least five years long but can be longer. Salary scale is determined as the league average price of the top 25% of players by salary at the same primary position on league 40 man rosters at the time of the contract offer, rounded down to the nearest whole number of players.

Any player who has a salary that exceeds this structure, can have their contract extended (for at least 5 years), at the current salary they make (ie. Mookie Betts makes $10.19 million, he could be extended for 5 more seasons at this rate).

Both extensions must be offered by March 31st. Once the regular season begins they are no longer eligible.

Teams who are over the salary cap are not permitted to extend contracts, or increase payroll, until they are under the salary cap.Teams who are over the salary cap are not permitted to extend contracts, or increase payroll, until they are under the salary cap.

Here is the required salary for contract extensions by position based on ARB year:

POS ARB 3 (top 25%) ----- ARB 1/2 (top 50%)
c $5,038,000.00 ----- $4,087,000.00
1b $7,180,000.00 ----- $5,446,000.00
2b $5,157,000.00 ----- $3,821,000.00
3b $7,235,000.00 ----- $5,897,000.00
ss $6,860,000.00 ----- $5,397,000.00
cf $7,163,000.00 ----- $5,483,000.00
lf $7,446,000.00 ----- $6,171,000.00
rf $7,032,000.00 ----- $5,436,000.00
dh $3,300,000.00 ----- $3,150,000.00
SP $5,843,000.00 ----- $4,732,000.00
RP $4,094,000.00 ----- $3,371,000.00

Finally, you can always choose to take the player to arbitration, in which case their salary will be determined when the 2021 SOM cards are released next year. Here is the relevant rule.

Section 9.11    ARBITRATION: A player with an expiring contract who has more than 3 years and up to 6 years of service time qualifies for arbitration if the owner declines to release the player, offer a contract extension, or to renew the player at the Major League Minimum Salary. If the owner chooses arbitration the player will be renewed at the salary established for his SOMO card price for the following season. If the player does not have a SOM card to settle the arbitration decision, the player is awarded the league minimum salary based on years of service (i.e. $2 mil for arb1, $3 mil for arb 2, etc). The owner must decline to offer a contract extension prior to the release of the SOM card set for the upcoming season or the player will be automatically renewed for one year at their qualified major league minimum salary as determined in Sections 9.05 and 9.06 above.

Please submit your contract decisions by midnight March 31st, if not earlier. Please try to submit them only one time to minimize my need to revise the spread sheet.

Congratulations on completing one full cycle of the Moneyball baseball league! Good luck on your coming seasons, and my the pandemic be banished by the end of the summer. Play Ball!

Do pre-arb players follow contract renewal rules (higher of card value or service time minimum)?

Or do they follow league minimum until they reach arbitrarion?

I don't think curren card value matters anymore (except for the guys who just went through arbitration). isn't it higher of current salary (which was last years card value) or service time minimum.

A pre arb player can be renewed at his current salary or at the league minimum for the appropriate pre arb year, whichever is higher. To give you a couple examples, you have Cedric Mullins making $600,000 in 2020. 2021 will be his pre arb3 year. League min. for pre arb3 is 700,000. So if you wish to renew him for 2021 you will have to pay him $700,000. You have Maricio Dubon who is making $2,150,000 in 2020 also entering his pre arb3 year in 2021. His current salary is higher than the 700,000 minimum so you will have to pay him $2,150,000 in 2021 if you want to re sign him.
Eventually, once all the players who were drafted in the initial draft are through their pre arb years, there will be no players above the league minimums during pre arb. Prospects you promote will follow league minimums until they reach arbitration at which point they are eligible for arb and multi year contracts.
One last thing. You mention card value in regard to contract renewal rules. If you want to renew a player for 1 year (2021 in this case) it will be at his current (2020) salary or the appropriate league minimum whichever is higher. SOM card values are only used to determine salaries for players you take to arbitration.

I have several clarification questions.

Pre-arb players, are they only allowed to sign a 1 year contract?

Arb 1 and 2 players, do they have to sign a four year contract or can we adjust the years?

Arb 3 players, must their contract be for a minimum of 5 years or can we do less?

Pre-arb only allowed 1 year contracts
Arb 1 and 2 only allowed 4 year contracts if you want to sign them to a multi year deal.
Arb 3 must be signed to a minimum of 5 years if you want to sign them to a multi year deal.
