Moneyball Free Agent Signings

PostMon Nov 30, 2020 10:49 pm

The free agent signing period will begin on Monday January 4th. Each team, in reverse order of last seasons cumulative wins, will bid on a player until four players are currently being bid upon. If no other team makes a competing offer on the player for a 24 hour period the player is considered to be signed. Once a player is signed the next owner will place a bid on a new free agent such that there are always four players being bid upon. Please be timely in making a bid on a new free agent when your turn arrives.

I have decided to stick with the prospect eligibility and free agent eligibility rules as written, including the AB and IP qualifications.

I have updated the list of available hitters and available pitchers for free agency on the league google sheet available here:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1TSeJ_mhSKq9szVan4qaQf2hTtpzmNm0pCtgTVCrFbZg/edit?usp=sharing

Philip

Remember, the list is not exhaustive as it only includes 2019 carded players who are not currently rostered or available on the waiver wire.

I have added a tab on the google sheet for players who have been cut and are currently on waivers.

The "draft" order for the free agent signing period is listed below.

Phil, a question. So, at the end of our upcoming FA draft we must have filled a full 40 man roster. Then, we have our 3 man prospect draft.

If we draft a prospect who has a 2020 card because they played in 2020, and it's a good card, can we immediately promote them to the 40 man and cut someone off our 40 man to make space. So that we can play the prospect this upcoming season.

Article 7 Section 3: Regular players on the 40 man roster cannot be released in order to promote a prospect while a season is in progress.

Article 7 Section 4: Regular players can be released from the 40 man roster only for the following reasons:
* pre-draft release prior to the Annual winter free agent draft
* pre-draft release prior to the Supplemental free agent draft
* to bring a roster down to the 40 man limit as a result of an unbalanced transaction.
* teams are responsible for the remaining contract, if any, of released players.

Article 9 Section 7 (a) PLAYER CUTS: Team owners have to make decisions about cutting players under contract for the upcoming MLB season by November 30.

Article 9 Section 9: CUTTING PLAYERS: Players with under six years of service time whose contracts have not been extended can be released during the offseason.

Based on these rules I would say that you can only cut players prior to the winter and supplemental free agent signing periods. This means that if you draft a carded prospect you would only be able to promote him between the first and second seasons.

Gentlemen,

The free agent signing period begins on Monday. Here are the Free Agency Rules:

Section 10.01 INTRODUCTION: Teams may obtain free agents during the free agency signing periods. When free agency begins, teams are welcome to post a player on the free agency page. In their message, they should state their team, the number of years being offered and the total value of the contract. The first team to post a bid on a free agent must have their offer beat by succeeding bids. The dollar amounts of bids must increase by a minimum of $100,000 or 5% per year more than the previous bid, whichever is higher. The dollar bid does not have to increase if the years offered are increased.
(a)     Example: New York Yankees offer Derek Jeter a two-year, $10 million contract ($5 million per season). If a team makes a contract offer to a player, and no one beats the offer in 24 hours, that team is awarded the player for the contract they offered. All messages on the message boards are time stamped and strictly enforced.

Section 10.02 FREE AGENT ELIGIBILITY: Unsigned carded players from the previous SOM 365 season, and players with more than 6 years of service time and an expiring contract, are eligible for free agency. In addition, MLB players who were uncarded the previous SOM 365 season, and who had at least 50 at bats or 30 innings pitched during the current MLB season, will be eligible for free agency. [Note, this means that players with no MLB experience prior to the 2020 MLB season, but who are carded in the SOM 2020 season, are still considered prospects and not free agents for the purpose of our annual prospect draft]. If you sign a player and SOM either does not produce a card for that player, or produces an unleashed card, you are still responsible for their contract.

Section 10.03 FREE AGENT SIGNING PERIOD: All free agents for the coming winter will be posted by December 1 on the Free Agency page. Only teams under the salary cap may bid on free agents. No team may make a bid for a free agent that will result in their team exceeding the salary cap. Free Agency will begin on the first weekday after January 1st. Free agent bidding will be closed and settled at midnight each day from Monday to Friday with no exceptions. The winning bids will be posted as soon as the commissioner can clear the ledger. The winter free agent signing period ends at midnight on January 31st.

Section 10.04 BIDDING: In order to obtain a free agent, a team must bid more money per year AND at least as many years as anyone else. Money for contracts are divided evenly among all years. Once a bid has been placed for a player, a team must match years offered and exceed money per year to obtain the player. Teams can offer an "option" year. It counts as 0.5 of a year when deciding what team gets a player.
(a)     Example: a two-year contract + option would beat a two-year offer. It would not beat a three year offer.
(b)     Option years cannot be offered on one-year contracts. If a team declines an option on an expiring contract, the team is obligated to pay 50% of the salary as a buyout.

Section 10.05 Example 1: Derek Jeter is a free agent. Team A bids 2 year, $10 million contract ($5 million per year). Any team placing a bid after Team A, must match the years offered and exceed the money per year offered to pass Team A for their rights.

Section 10.06 Example 2: Derek Jeter is a free agent. Team A bids 2 year, $10 million contract ($5 million per year). Team B bids Jeter a 3 year, $12 million contract ($4 million per year). Team A would be awarded Jeter because when Team B countered, they did not match money per year.

Section 10.07 Example 3: Derek Jeter is a free agent. Team A bids 2 year, $10 million contract ($5 million per year). Team B offers Jeter a 1 year, $6 million contract. Team A would be awarded Jeter because Team B did not match the number of years offered. It pays to make your offer first.

Section 10.08 CONTRACT MINIMUMS In order to offer a certain amount of years to a player, you must also offer a certain amount of money. The longer the contract, the more money you need to offer. These are minimums to offer, regardless if another team has made another offer. Contract minimums are intended to prevent unrealistic contract signings such as five years for $0.50 a year.

1 year = $500,000 per season ($0.50)
2 years = $1 million per season ($1.00)
3 years = $2 million per season ($2.00)
4 years = $3 million per season ($3.00)
5 years = $4 million per season ($4.00)
6 years = $5 million per season ($5.00)
7+ years = $6 million per season ($6.00)

Section 10.09 All owners must have a full 40-man roster upon completion of the annual winter free agent signings.

CLARIFICATIONS:

1. Any player who debuted in the 2020 MLB season is considered a prospect regardless of his card status. If you draft a carded prospect, you will be able to promote that prospect to your major league roster between season 1 and season 2.

2. Players who were un-carded or unleashed in the 2019 SOM season, and who debuted in MLB prior to 2020, are eligible to be signed if they had at least 50 at bats or 30 innings pitched.

3. The bottom four teams will initiate the bidding process by announcing a contract offer beginning on Monday. If a competing bid is placed, the clock is reset until no new bids are placed on the player in a 24 hour period. If no one else bids on the player in the 24 hours after the last bid was placed, the player is considered to be signed and the next lowest ranked team will make an offer on a new player. There will always be four players being bid upon through out the free agent signing period.

Let the bidding begin!
