SCKL League Chat Thread

Hey guys

Just curious if there would be any interest in starting a keeper (regular set), but with a salary cap. Somewhere in the $100-120k range is where my heads at. Initial thoughts would be typical 40 man roster (or less), prospect draft or no prospect draft (wouldn't matter either way to me), no required drops each year since the cap would come into play each year (playing 2 seasons) based on the SOM salaries they assign players. Only roster restrictions would be those laid out by SOM (see below)

At all times, you must have at least 24 players and no more than 28 players on your roster.
You must have at least 13 and no more than 17 hitters.
- At least two of those hitters must have catcher as their primary position.
You must have at least 10 and no more than 12 pitchers.
You must have at least 5 pitchers who have starting pitcher Endurance ratings (e.g. S7).
You must have at least 4 "pure" relievers (i.e. a relief rating (e.g. R2) but no starter rating).
You must have at least 1 pitcher who has a closer Endurance rating (e.g. C4)

Probably because it was late last night when the thought popped in my head, but wondered how it would be to build a team and be restricted by a cap. i.e. - Aaron Judge goes from .50M in '16 set to "x" in the '17 set. Now I have to adjust for the hit to the cap as part of the 24-28 man roster or do I move him for some guys expecting them to get better (and assuming he continues to have a decent salary number)

The only salaries that would go against the cap would be those on your active roster whether you do it with 24 or 28 guys. Those on the bench wouldn't count against it until you "played" them.

Not sure if this makes sense or if any of you veterans have tried it and have some feedback, but was curious.

The salary cap would be bothersome to me. I joined a keeper league in 2010 and sacrificed the first couple of years to achieve a roster that long term would be more beneficial to competing. The last 2 years I had a 24 man roster totaling $150k plus. Why penalize someone willing to look long term (after all, it's a keeper league)? Knowing that there is a cap of 100k would force me to draft Zack Cozart instead of Fernando Tatis Jr, Just my 2 cents :)

With the 40 man roster or whatever is agreed upon (35 maybe) then you could do exactly that in the draft Jerlins. Use some middle to late picks for the “promising” players.

I had a team this past year at $165 million with 28 players so I agree. I’ve also had teams that I took over and turned into rebuilds at $70-80 million. That’s what would make the initial draft so fun since who knows how the other 11 guys will draft. I guess it made me wonder if I could still win with the team I assembled ($165m plus my 12 guys I wasn’t using in the SOM team) if I was forced to stay below a cap number. Figured it would require more thought as to how to deploy my team the best. Which is also why I was thinking no mandatory cuts each year, if I did make some moves thinking of the future.

I'm kinda intrigued Ernie.
definitely like that cuts wouldn't be mandatory or that you could cut as few as you felt needed without the standard 10-15 in most leagues. I would definitely want a prospect roster though.

Here's an example of the "dilemma" I'd be in with this team I have

Ramos Wilson 6,490,000
Soto Geovany 2,930,000
Votto Joey 9,510,000
LeMahieu DJ 10,540,000
Bryant Kris 8,650,000
Seager Corey 4,970,000
Blackmon Charlie 7,080,000
Toles Andrew 4,640,000
Dahl David 5,810,000
Werth Jayson 2,420,000
Ortiz David 9,310,000
Reddick Josh 2,650,000
Cain Lorenzo 3,860,000
Arcia Orlando 1,380,000

These 14 hitters total $80,240,000

Hamels Cole 6,070,000
Kershaw Clayton 10,600,000
Arrieta Jake 6,500,000
Hill Rich 8,260,000
Darvish Yu 5,640,000
Claudio Alex 1,610,000
Britton Zach 6,060,000
Kimbrel Craig 4,310,000
Davis Wade 3,200,000
Harris Will 3,650,000

These 10 pitchers total $55,900,000

So $136,140,000 or $36,140,000 over the cap

Doesn't mean I lose them, I would just have to adjust the roster with my remaining guys (see below) to stay below the cap each night. Not sure if SOM has a setting (or could create one for this keeper) so there's no drop penalty as more strategy would be involved and matchups would be paid attention to

Martinez Victor 3,940,000
Grandal Yasmani 4,120,000
Avila Alex 2,750,000
Buxton Byron 1,770,000
Saunders Michael 2,900,000
Piscotty Stephen 5,620,000
Puig Yasiel 2,700,000
Chisenhall Lonnie 2,030,000

Guerra Junior 4,980,000
Richards Garrett 2,040,000
McCarthy Brandon 3,260,000
Stephenson Robert 500,000
Brach Brad 3,430,000

Since there seems to be some legs on this, I'll "draw up" some rules thoughts for us and post on both boards in a bit.
