The “advantage” is it lets you keep a prospect that you might have to release if his prospect clock is up. It no there is no “advantage” in fact you could argue it’s a disadvantage as you are using up a roster slot for a player you can’t use in the current season.

You can trade anyone you want up until roster cuts deadline. Roster cuts don't become official until that date.
